Such a one liner about holy-days sums up the subject of this week's fathersonline - Easter Family Holidays. Most of us celebrate Easter holidays but where did they come from and why do we celebrate them? Most countries in the world celebrate Easter with public holidays such as Good Friday or Easter Monday. Easter Monday is celebrated in 114 countries out of 192 member states of the United Nation. This is a very clear majority. Many people find the Easter Holiday break annoying because the dates change every year. The reason for this is that the celebration of Easter is based on a Luna-solar Calendar which is the same as the Hebrew Calendar. In many countries Easter is called 'Pascha', which is a Greek work derived from the Hebrew word 'Pesach', the Hebrew Festival of the Passover. The Passover Festival was a celebration of the rescue of the Israelites from Egypt when the Angel of Death struck the entire first born of Egypt. The father of the Hebrew homes sprinkled the blood of the lamb over the lintel of the door posts of the home to protect his family from judgment. Orthodox Jews still celebrate the Passover Festival today in much the same manner with the addition of a family meal of unleavened bread. It is interesting to note that Jewish fathers act out these stories and involve the children in a hunt for the removal of the unleavened bread. Sounds a bit like the hunt for Easter eggs to me. Don't you just love the idea of eating Easter eggs? Our children do. The Jewish people are masters of making learning fun. The family meal was not only a religious celebration but an interactive and fun learning experience for the children about their history. The Grothe's are definitely on the right track! Exercising together is one of the best ways a couple can connect every day. Joann Condie, RN ? Counselor, Focus on the Family says, "By doing fitness together, walking or other kinds of activities, that can be a time for great conversations and to bring up topics that maybe you'd be too rushed to do otherwise." Lisa Grothe,? newlywed, says, "Always was something I enjoyed doing with my parents even when I came home from college, because it was a good time to talk and communicate and just catch up, so I was like, I want to do this with my husband." Exercising with your spouse gives you a perfect workout partner, holding you accountable for those times when you're having trouble staying motivated. Joann says, "When one of you may want to sit and watch TV and eat potato chips, we can encourage each other to get up and to get going, so it's going to affect your mental health and your physical health, your sexual health." Daniel Grothe,? newly married, says, "I think the walking is actually just a way to spur the communication on. We mostly go on a walk for the sake of spending time with each other, so the walking is sort of an added health benefit of the communication benefit." Editor's Note: My wife and I recently changed gyms. As the gym does not open quite early enough for us, we walk to the gym, workout for just half an hour and then walk home again. Used with permission It was the smell that triggered the memory. The odour enveloped my senses, propelling me into an emotional time warp. Forgotten scenes replayed the episode like discovering a misplaced picture album in the back of the hall closet. For a brief moment, my mind willingly wandered through the memory. It happened at the strangest of places: a roadside rest stop north of Columbus, Ohio. I was on my way to speak at a conference, stopping for a quick break. Preoccupied with the upcoming conference, I pulled open the heavy brown metal doors to the rest stop lobby and was greeted by the overpowering odor of chlorine, like you get from an indoor pool. I don't know why it was there, but the pungent aroma reached past my conscious thoughts and unlocked the massive brass and wooden trunk of forgotten memories. My mind's recorder rewound to just the right spot and pressed play. In a split second I was transported to an event four years earlier in Wisconsin. My two daughters and I were at the pool of the hotel where I always stayed during our visits. Hilary, my oldest daughter, had just gone back to the room to clean up before dinner. My youngest daughter Alison and I were in the pool goofing around, working on our synchronized swimming routines: turn, twist, dive, leap, gasp, cough, and so forth. Caught up in the performance, Alison executed a backward underwater somersault too close to the bottom and struck her head on the pool floor. Panic stricken, I grabbed her and helped her regain her footing. Holding her head, tears beginning to flow, I pulled her close, hoping to ease her pain. She was eleven-almost twelve if you asked her - but it was like holding my little girl when she was three. We stood there, alone in the middle of the pool, tightly hugging each other. I said something to try to comfort her as her tears began to subside, but she said nothing. That's when it happened. Even though she had stopped crying, she didn't let go, and neither did I. Time stood still. We had reached out to each other because she was hurt, but we held on because this was something that we both had missed over the years living so far apart. No words were spoken. Our communication was beyond any words - a father's soul to a daughter's heart, both starving for this moment that neither thought would come, yet both hoping against hope. It was the hug that changed my life. If you have never been separated from your children for long periods of time, you may not understand, though I'm sure you share a deep love for your children. However, if you're one of the thousands of fathers who are separated, divorced or incarcerated, you know exactly what I'm saying. We long for the opportunity to patch a scraped knee, sooth a hurting spirit, or chase away the monsters under the bed. These little, yet significant moments pass us by as our children seem to grow up much faster when we're apart. We would like to be there at that moment when our children need us, perhaps just once when they're hurt from a bicycle fall or sad because of a classmate's unkind remark - just once. But for most of us, those moments pass us by. Sure, we have our visits, and if our children get hurt we comfort them, but visits aren't real day-to-day life. They're condensed time capsules, crammed with an abundance of activities, trying to make up for lost time. Just when the visit begins to slow to a normal pace, it's time to take them home. All that fills the silence after the good-byes is the sad sensation that so many things were left undone or unsaid. You pledge to do them during the next visit, but by then she has grown so much that you need to find your bearings and get over the initial discomfort, and your visit time flies. So now you understand why I say this was the hug that changed my life. For in that instant, an emerging young lady once again became "Daddy's little girl"; a struggling father became a dad; both souls received a glorious answer to our desperate prayers. Thank God for memories. They dearly hold what we hold dear, waiting to be relived again and again, arriving when we least expect them, triggered by a song, a familiar sight, or perhaps even a smell. This forum gave presentations to the major parties on the needs of men and fathers in the context of supporting Australian families. The Australian Labor Party announced in the lead up to the last election, 5th November 2007, that they would develop a National Men's Health Policy if elected, with a particular focus on indigenous and rural men's health. The Fatherhood Foundation commends the Labor Party on this bold initiative and encourages all parliamentarians to take a bi-partisan approach to the development of National Men's Health Policy for the benefit of all Australians. There will be a parliamentary reporting session open to all parliamentarians between 5pm and 6 pm to report on the Men & Fathers' Health Forum. Henry Youngman, a comedian who was k= now as 'King of the One Liners' once said, "I was an atheist for a while bu= t I gave it up, no holi-days." Such a one liner about holy-days sums up the= subject of this week's fathersonline - Easter Family Holidays.

 

Most of us celebrate Easter holidays= but where did they come from and why do we celebrate them? Most countries = in the world celebrate Easter with public holidays such as Good Friday or E= aster Monday. Easter Monday is celebrated in 114 countries out of 192 membe= r states of the United Nation. This is a very clear majority.

 

Many people find the Easter Holiday = break annoying because the dates change every year. The reason for this is = that the celebration of Easter is based on a Luna-solar Calendar which is t= he same as the Hebrew Calendar. In many countries Easter is called 'Pascha'= , which is a Greek work derived from the Hebrew word 'Pesach', the Hebrew F= estival of the Passover. The Passover Festival was a celebration of the res= cue of the Israelites from Egypt when the Angel of Death struck the entire = first born of Egypt. The father of the Hebrew homes sprinkled the blood of = the lamb over the lintel of the door posts of the home to protect his famil= y from judgment.

 

Orthodox Jews still celebrate the Pa= ssover Festival today in much the same manner with the addition of a family= meal of unleavened bread. It is interesting to note that Jewish fathers ac= t out these stories and involve the children in a hunt for the removal of t= he unleavened bread. Sounds a bit like the hunt for Easter eggs to me. Don'= t you just love the idea of eating Easter eggs? Our children do.

 

The Jewish people are masters of mak= ing learning fun. The family meal was not only a religious celebration but = an interactive and fun learning experience for the children about their his= tory.

 

What are the origins of Good Friday = or 'God Friday' as written in old English some 500 years ago? I'll let Wiki= pedia tell the story of what happened on that first Good Friday.

However Wikipedia does not tell the = whole story of Easter. For most of us, and especially our children, the giv= ing of Easter eggs on the Sunday of Easter is a celebration of the resurrec= tion, the empty tomb and the Easter holiday. We also need Monday off in ord= er to recover from the deliriums of chocolate poisoning.

Whichever way you celebrate Easter, = tell your children how the Easter family holiday started in the first place= and the price that was paid so that we could have some holi-days.

Daniel and Lisa wouldn't miss their daily walk for anythi= ng, even when the weather doesn't cooperate! The Grothe's are definitely on= the right track!

Exercising together is one of the best ways a couple can = connect every day.

 

Joann Condie, RN ­ Counselor, Focus on the Family say= s, "By doing fitness together, walking or other kinds of activities, that c= an be a time for great conversations and to bring up topics that maybe you'= d be too rushed to do otherwise."

 

Lisa Grothe,­ newlywed, says, "Always was something I= enjoyed doing with my parents even when I came home from college, because = it was a good time to talk and communicate and just catch up, so I was like= , I want to do this with my husband."

 

Exercising with your spouse gives you a perfect workout p= artner, holding you accountable for those times when you're having trouble = staying motivated.

 

Joann says, "When one of you may want to sit and watch TV= and eat potato chips, we can encourage each other to get up and to get goi= ng, so it's going to affect your mental health and your physical health, yo= ur sexual health."

 

Daniel Grothe,­ newly married, says, "I think the wal= king is actually just a way to spur the communication on. We mostly go on a= walk for the sake of spending time with each other, so the walking is sort= of an added health benefit of the communication benefit."

 

Daniel and Lisa are reaping lots of benefits; they're get= ting healthier, strengthening their relationship, having fun and laying gro= undwork for healthy kids one day.

 

Lisa says, "We already dream and think about the day when= we're walking with our kids and they're riding their bikes. It's a traditi= on, you know a family thing."

 

Daniel says, = "I would never have guessed that I would love going on walks. I thought wal= king was stupid, but now that I'm a married man and we're doing the family = thing, going on a walk is just the best thing that we could do!"

 

Editor's Note= :

My wife and I= recently changed gyms. As the gym does not open quite early enough for us,= we walk to the gym, workout for just half an hour and then walk home again= . Slowly, we are talking more as we walk, appreciating our time together, a= nd even holding hands.

A Div= orced Father Reconnects With His Daughter

It was the s= mell that triggered the memory. The odour enveloped my senses, propelling m= e into an emotional time warp. Forgotten scenes replayed the episode like d= iscovering a misplaced picture album in the back of the hall closet. For a = brief moment, my mind willingly wandered through the memory.<= /span>

It happened = at the strangest of places: a roadside rest stop north of Columbus, Ohio. I= was on my way to speak at a conference, stopping for a quick break. Preocc= upied with the upcoming conference, I pulled open the heavy brown metal doo= rs to the rest stop lobby and was greeted by the overpowering odor of chlor= ine, like you get from an indoor pool. I don't know why it was there, but t= he pungent aroma reached past my conscious thoughts and unlocked the massiv= e brass and wooden trunk of forgotten memories. My mind's recorder rew= ound to just the right spot and pressed

In a split s= econd I was transported to an event four years earlier in Wisconsin. My two= daughters and I were at the pool of the hotel where I always stayed during= our visits. Hilary, my oldest daughter, had just gone back to the room to = clean up before dinner. My youngest daughter Alison and I were in the pool = goofing around, working on our synchronized swimming routines: turn, twist,= dive, leap, gasp, cough, and so forth.

Caught up in= the performance, Alison executed a backward underwater somersault too clos= e to the bottom and struck her head on the pool floor. Panic stricken, I gr= abbed her and helped her regain her footing. Holding her head, tears beginn= ing to flow, I pulled her close, hoping to ease her pain. She was eleven-al= most twelve if you asked her - but it was like holding my little girl when = she was three. We stood there, alone in the middle of the pool, tightly hug= ging each other. I said something to try to comfort her as her tears began = to subside, but she said nothing.

That's when = it happened. Even though she had stopped crying, she didn't let go, and nei= ther did I. Time stood still.

We had reach= ed out to each other because she was hurt, but we held on because this was = something that we both had missed over the years living so far apart. No wo= rds were spoken. Our communication was beyond any words - a father's soul t= o a daughter's heart, both starving for this moment that neither thought wo= uld come, yet both hoping against hope. It was the hug that changed my life= .

If you have = never been separated from your children for long periods of time, you may n= ot understand, though I'm sure you share a deep love for your children. How= ever, if you're one of the thousands of fathers who are separated, divorced= or incarcerated, you know exactly what I'm saying.

3D"BandaidWe lon= g for the opportunity to patch a scraped knee, sooth a hurting spirit, or c= hase away the monsters under the bed. These little, yet significant moments= pass us by as our children seem to grow up much faster when we're apart. W= e would like to be there at that  moment when our children need us, pe= rhaps just once when they're hurt from a bicycle fall or sad because of a c= lassmate's unkind remark - just once. But for most of us, those moments pas= s us by.

Sure, we hav= e our visits, and if our children get hurt we comfort them, but visits aren= 't real day-to-day life. They're condensed time capsules, crammed with an a= bundance of activities, trying to make up for lost time. Just when the visi= t begins to slow to a normal pace, it's time to take them home. All that fi= lls the silence after the good-byes is the sad sensation that so many thing= s were left undone or unsaid. You pledge to do them during the next visit, = but by then she has grown so much that you need to find your bearings and g= et over the initial discomfort, and your visit time flies.

So now you u= nderstand why I say this was the hug that changed my life. For in that inst= ant, an emerging young lady once again became "Daddy's little girl"; a stru= ggling father became a dad; both souls received a glorious answer to our de= sperate prayers.

Thank God fo= r memories. They dearly hold what we hold dear, waiting to be relived again= and again, arriving when we least expect them, triggered by a song, a fami= liar sight, or perhaps even a smell.

It was a custom during th= e feast of Passover for the Romans to release one prisoner as requested by = the Jews. Pilate asks the crowd who they would like to be released. Pilate asks what they would have him do with Jesus, and = they demand, "Crucify him" (Mark 15:6-14). Media Release-Men & Fathers' Heal= th Forum

The Fatherhood F= oundation is convening a meeting of key stakeholders of fatherhood and men'= s groups, health professionals and indigenous leaders to discuss a national= men's health policy. The Fatherhood Foundation has long been an advocate f= or a National Men's Health Policy.

 

In 2003 the Fath= erhood Foundation released 'The 12pt Plan' in Federal Parliament which is c= ontained in the 'Fathers and Families' document. The purpose o= f The 12pt Plan is to strengthen family relationships and turn the tide of = fatherlessness in Australia. Points 11 and 12 of The 12pt Plan relate to th= e need for a National Men's Health Policy to address the needs of Australia= n Men. The need for a National Men's Health Policy was again raised by Prof= essor John Macdonald at the 'Men & Father's Family Friendly Policy Forum'= , held at Parliament House, Canberra 20th June 2007. The Australian L= abor Party announced in the lead up to the last election, 5th No= vember 2007, that they would develop a National Men's Health Policy if elec= ted, with a particular focus on indigenous and rural men's health. The Fath= erhood Foundation commends the Labor Party on this bold initiative and enco= urages all parliamentarians to take a bi-partisan approach to the developme= nt of National Men's Health Policy for the benefit of all Australians. Ther= e will be a parliamentary reporting session open to all parliamentarians be= tween 5pm and 6 pm to report on the Men & Fathers' Health Forum.

The purpose of t= he Men & Father's Health Forum at Parliament House, Canberra is to further = promote the need for a National Men's Health Policy in the context of the n= eeds of Australian families. The second goal is to support and encourage Au= stralian families as the quality of the relationships between mothers, fath= ers and their children will determine the future health of Australia.
