Frontline

There is no doubt that in times past, women were oppressed and mistreated by men.
Unfortunately it still occurs today. As Bettina Arndt wrote, "No gender has a monopoly
on vice." Things began to change for the better when Jesus Christ was born. In those
days Jewish men had a prayer, "Thank God I was not born a woman." Jesus cut across
this derogation of womanhood completely by making friends with women. He even did
the unthinkable; he talked to a woman of a different race, a Samaritan. Scholars
say that the themes of the book of Luke are 'the poor' and 'equality for women'.
I find that hard to argue with. Wherever the message of God's unconditional love
through Jesus went, women have flourished.
The lot of women improved even more with the Suffragette Movement. One of the earliest
suffragettes in the USA was Sojourner Truth, a black woman who was also a preacher.
In the late 1800s the Suffragettes in England, many of whom were influenced by their
faith, worked with Keir Hardie, the founder of the Scottish Labour Party. Keir Hardie
was also greatly inspired by his faith and was a great supporter of women receiving
the vote on the same basis as men. This was ultimately achieved in England in 1918.
It is interesting to note that New Zealand granted women the right to vote in 1893,
whilst South Australia became the first colony to allow women to vote in 1894. Federation
in Australia in 1902 secured the right for women to vote which put Australia well
ahead of the rest of the world, but still behind New Zealand, much to the delight
of our Kiwi friends.
Many would argue that the feminist movement of the late 60s, early 70s radical student
revolution (of which I was a part) really put women on the map.
The question of course has to be asked, "What has happened to the men and fathers
in the process?" Men lag behind women in several areas of law and public policy.
 These are:
1) Men's Health. Australia has a National Women's Health Policy (1989) but no national
men's health policy. Men die almost six years younger than women. Measured in every
way, including government spending, men are disadvantaged in the area of health.
2) Family Law. In spite of the Federal government's recent changes, men and fathers
face tremendous legal prejudice and anti-male bias.
3) Domestic Violence is another area where men are presumed guilty until proven
innocent. Read our Special Feature to find out how this industry displays an irrational
bias against the male of the species.
4) Boys Education. In New South Wales, boys Higher School Certificate exam marks
now lag 20% behind girls. At one stage boys used to do slightly better. There is
a crisis in boys' education in Australia and in most western countries. Change is
coming far too slowly.
5) Paternity Fraud. Many men suffer this indignity but the courts and governmental
systems protect the guilty party.
6) Anti-Male Government Regulation and Bias. The classic case in point is the proposed
Same Sex Relationship Bill 2008 currently before the NSW Parliament. Please see

Sadly I could go on and on. How and why did the pendulum swing so far the other
way? Perhaps Erin Pizzey, the woman who founded the first women's refuge in the
UK could give us some much needed insight:
During 1970, I was a young housewife with a husband, two children, two dogs and
a cat . . .
. . . By the early seventies, a new movement for women - demanding equality and
rights - began to make headlines in the daily newspapers . . . and I was on my way
to join the Women's Liberation Movement . . .
. . . My fascination with this new movement lasted only a few months. At the huge
'collectives', I heard shrill women preaching hatred of the family. They said the
family was not a safe place for women and children. I was horrified at their virulence
and violent tendencies. I stood on the same platforms trying to reason with the
leading lights of this new organization . . .
. . . I ended up being thrown out by the movement. My crime was to warn some of
the women of the Women's Liberation Movement that if it persisted in cooperating
with a plan to bomb Biba, I would call the police . . .
. . . I decided that I was wasting my time trying to influence what, to my mind,
was a Marxist feminist movement touting for money from gullible women like myself
. . .
. . . All through my career, as a journalist, a writer and a social reformer, I
have been hounded and bullied by feminist women and their coat-trailing 'new men'
. . .
. . . I watched horror stricken, as in home after home, I saw boys denied not only
their access to their fathers, but also access to all that was normal and masculine
in their lives . . .
. . . Both men and women have been guilty of politicizing human relationships. Human
relationships are not a matter of political solutions. Any country that has tried
to create a political solution to human problems has ended up with concentration
camps and gulags. The deep wounds between men and women will take time to heal
. . .
. . . I believe that love between men and women is the strongest relationship on
this earth. For now, we have to fight to protect family life. Hopefully, as we
move into a new century, men and women can meet each other not only as equals, partners
and friends but also as lovers.
Lovework
Love is always the answer. Hate destroys but love builds up. Love your wife and
kids and become the change you seek. When we derogate either sex we derogate both.
Only love is the antidote.
Yours for more love

Gender Roles in Marriage:
What it Means to Lead and Follow
By Paul Coughlin - Author, 'Married But Not Engaged'
April 29, 2008
In growing numbers, we're finally taking dance lessons. You could give both of us
a drink with Sodium Pentothal in it and we still couldn't tell you why, after 15
years of talking about it, we finally bought those special shoes and threw pride
to the wind. Perhaps we weren't ready to push aside our fear of public humiliation,
which was actually kind of fun.
Though we still don't know what got us over the hump and onto the dance floor, we
now possess a deeper insight into what it means to lead and support each other in
our evolving marriage thanks to some stunning visual displays.
Tango is by far the most arresting dance we're learning. By arresting, we mean what
other couples accomplish through unique roles, not what we are able to stumble through.
These roles of men leading and women supporting, properly executed, give the impression
that there are no roles at all. It's not obvious that anyone is leading or supporting.
What you witness is the fruit of their abilities, which is delicious.
You witness two people mustering their talent, power, and sensuality to create a
level of physical and emotional intimacy that cannot be created by an individual
dancer. He steps forth and leads with intention; she supports his intention, enhancing
their shared desire to create something grand. He leans into her, and she into him.
Technically it's leadership. But practically, his behavior looks more like guidance,
provision, and care with style.
Advanced tango dancers, as in advanced marriages, ad lib their way across the floor
because there are no shoe prints outlined in white to follow. They move by the impulses
of their hearts, by the room's physical borders, around others in their path, and
by the direction of his firm hand and her receptive body. As in marriage, someone
has to guide, or they will fall on one another. It would just be a matter of time
before everyone on the dance floor fell into a heap of twisted ankles and angry
words.
Her support and receptivity are not degrading. She glows with dignity. She honors
him with donations of her trust. His lead is not stern or overbearing. He exudes
reverence and, in doing so, cherishes her.
He does not fall into the sin of domination; she doesn't cower and become a passive
accomplice to such ugliness. That would be heartbreaking to witness: He pushing
her around the floor with a scowl on his face, and she retaliating with spiteful
words and punitive glares. A creation with so much potential for beauty would become
a foul display, another gender-war skirmish and hash mark on the wall of sexual
disillusion. It would be like watching an anti-miracle of wine turned into stagnant
pond water.

TIME TO END SEXISM IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE POLICY
By Roger Smith
Part 1
On International Women Day 2008, feminist activists and service providers scored
yet another victory in their domestic violence campaign. Not only can men accused
of domestic violence be expelled from their own houses, but domestic violence in
New South Wales is to be made into a specific crime - presumably, one that carries
greater odium and stigma than mere assault.
However, for many victims of the most insidious, vicious and hidden forms of domestic
violence, this is probably a reason for commiseration rather than celebration.
For years now, domestic violence policy and services in Australia have been based
on a 1970s paradigm that, in turn, was based on a 1950s model of Western society.
Domestic violence policy and service provision in Australia is overwhelmingly dominated
by the "Duluth method" which claims that domestic violence is something that men
do to women because of the patriarchal society in which we live and the political,
social and cultural control that men exercise over women. Male batterers, they claim,
operate from a position of socially-sanctioned power, and therefore, the way to
end domestic violence is to end men's sense of privilege.
Few would seriously recognize this model of society as the one in which we live
in Australia in 2008. To take an example, if men were "privileged", we would expect
them to have preferred access to higher education. Yet there are far more women
enrolled in Australian universities than there are men. In respect of school retention
rates, the gap is in double figures - around 69% for boys compared to over 80% for
girls at the national level. I say good luck to the girls! But it hardly supports
the notion of patriarchy.
Similarly, few would accept that in relation to the laws governing the dissolution
of marriage, dominant culture and power relationships privilege men over women.
If we indeed live in a patriarchal society in Australia, North America and Europe
in 2008, it is precisely in the realm of family law, divorce and inheritance that
you would expect to find these excesses of male dominance just like in all other
 examples of patriarchal society.
However, the reality is quite the opposite. Since 2005, the Australian Government
has even been forced to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to, in fact, redress
the disadvantages suffered by men at the dissolution of marriage, including with
respect to care and support arrangements for children and alternatives to the court
system that were quite literally driving men to suicide.
The changes being introduced to the child support system, in particular, are based
on a recognition that Australian society has changed drastically in a period of
just two decades since the original scheme was introduced. Biological differences
allowing, women are now rightly expected to participate in paid work to help support
their families financially. And men are expected to pull their weight in household
matters and with respect to the care of children. This is a "win-win" situation
that early feminist activists ought rightly to be proud of - not only for the social
gains but also for the economic advances made possible as a result of women's open
participation in public life.
If we accept these changes to society as self-evident, then we must also accept
as dated the Duluth model's diagnosis of domestic violence as resulting from men's
socially-sanctioned power over women. Or, to take this model to its logical conclusion,
if the laws of marriage, divorce and custody rights are perceived to favour women,
couldn't we also expect women to engage in abusive "controlling" behaviour proportionate
to the perceived power imbalance and advantages they could expect to obtain in terms
of money and custody of children at the end of a relationship? Yes, we could and
we have. If this is the case, shouldn't there also be services in places that educate
women about the harm caused by their controlling behaviour?
Even if Duluth-modeled family violence service providers accept that changes have
occurred in Western society in the last 40 years, they will probably move on to
the 'r' word - research. Doesn't nearly all the research support the view that domestic
violence overwhelmingly involves male perpetrators and female victims?
Well, not exactly. While cases reported to police and emergency services do mostly
involve female victims at the hands of male perpetrators, the more rigorous population-based
studies into the incidence and nature of domestic violence in English-speaking countries
tend to present a far more gender-neutral picture of family violence.
Probably the best and most recent study of this phenomenon is "Partner Violence
and Mental Health Outcomes in a New Zealand Birth Cohort" by Fergusson, Horwood
& Ridder published in the Journal of Family and Marriage (vol. 67. no. 5, Dec
2005, pp. 1103-1119).
This research examines in depth the domestic violence experiences a cohort of young
New Zealanders selected at random based on the birth records of a Christchurch hospital.
The key findings of the study were that domestic conflict (ranging from minor psychological
abuse to severe assault) is common, that men and women report similar incidence
and experiences of victimization and perpetration of domestic violence and that
exposure to domestic violence is significantly related to increased risk of major
depression and suicidal ideation.
This study is hardly a statistical outlier. In fact, Martin Fiebert of the Department
of Psychology, California State University, Long Beach has compiled a list of 209
scholarly investigations (161 empirical studies and 48 reviews and/or analyses)
indicating that women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men
in their relationships with their spouses or male partners (see http://www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm).
To be continued next week.

Special Feature

Men experience domestic violence, with health impact
Group Health study debunks five myths about abuse of men

SEATTLE-Domestic violence can happen to men, not only to women, according to Group
Health research in the June American Journal of Preventive Medicine. "Domestic violence
in men is under-studied and often hidden - much as it was in women 10 years ago,"
said study leader Robert J. Reid, MD, PhD, an associate investigator at the Group
Health Center for Health Studies. "We want abused men to know they're not alone."
His findings confirm some common beliefs but also debunk five myths about abuse
in men:

Myth 1:Few men experience domestic violence. Many do. In-depth phone interviews
with over 400 randomly sampled adult male Group Health patients surprised Dr. Reid
and his colleagues: 5% had experienced domestic violence in the past year, 10% in
the past five years, and 29% over their lifetimes. The researchers defined domestic
violence to include nonphysical abuse - threats, chronic disparaging remarks, or
controlling behavior - as well as physical abuse: slapping, hitting, kicking, or
forced sex.

Myth 2:Abuse of men has no serious effects. The researchers found domestic violence
is associated with serious, long-term effects on men's mental health. Women are
more likely than men to experience more severe physical abuse, said Dr. Reid. "But
even nonphysical abuse can do lasting damage." Depressive symptoms were nearly three
times as common in older men who had experienced abuse than in those who hadn't,
with much more severe depression in the men who had been abused physically.

Myth 3: Abused men don't stay, because they're free to leave. In fact, men may stay
for years with their abusive partners. "We know that many women may have trouble
leaving abusive relationships, especially if they're caring for young children
and not working outside the home," said Dr. Reid. "We were surprised to find that
most men in abusive relationships also stay, through multiple episodes, for years."
Myth 4:Domestic violence affects only poor people. The study actually showed it
to be an equal - opportunity scourge. "As we found in our previous research with
women experiencing domestic violence, this is a common problem affecting people
in all walks of life," said Dr. Reid. "Our patients at Group Health have health
insurance and easy access to health care, and their employment rate and average
income, education level, and age are higher than those of the rest of the U.S.
population."

Myth 5:Ignoring it will make it go away. Not so. "We doctors hardly ever ask our
male patients about being abused - and they seldom tell us," said Dr. Reid. "Many
abused men feel ashamed because of societal expectations for men to be tough and
in control." Younger men were twice as likely as men age 55 or older to report
recent abuse. "That may be because older men are even more reluctant to talk about
it," he added.

This study extends Group Health's research on domestic violence, a.k.a. intimate
partner violence. The team's previous publications have documented the prevalence,
persistence, and health effects of domestic violence on women. In the current study,
they asked men the same questions that they had asked of women. "Our team is concerned
about abuse of people: of women as well as men," Dr. Reid added. "We do not want
to downplay the seriousness of domestic violence as experienced by women."
Dr. Reid said more research is needed to determine the best ways for doctors to
ask men if they have experienced domestic violence - and how best to help them into
couples counseling, leaving their partners, or getting protection orders.

URGENT ACTION REQUIRED!
Your help is urgently needed to tell NSW politicians not to remove Dads from some
kids' birth certificates.
NSW politicians are set to vote next week on a bill that will allow lesbian couples
to deny the existence of a biological father by having two mothers listed on a child's
birth certificate, where a child has been conceived with the help of a sperm donor.
The bill is called Miscellaneous Acts Amendment (Same Sex Relationships) Bill 2008.
Debate on the bill resumes Tuesday June 3 and in the absence of public outcry a
vote may promptly occur on the same day.

Father's Day Discriminatory?
Friday 30th May 2008

The Rev Fred Nile, Leader of the Christian Democratic Party, has denounced a NSW
Government Bill as another ill-conceived attempt at social engineering. The Miscellaneous
Acts Amendment (Same Sex Relationships) Bill, that is likely to come before Parliament
next week, seeks to remove all reference to 'fathers' and 'paternity' from 57 Acts
of Law so that Lesbian defacto partners may be afforded the same legal status as
 biological Fathers.
"The Iemma ALP NSW State Government has introduced another controversial homosexual
Bill, which will amend 57 NSW Laws and remove all references to 'Fatherhood' or
'Paternity'. The Government have claimed that they have done so because of concerns
over equality and the rights of children that need protecting", stated Rev Fred
Nile
"The reality is, that in the haste to promote this latest attempt at social engineering,
significant oversights have been made regarding the inherent problems within the
proposed legislation. They speak of the rights of a child, but what of the child's
right to know who their father is. Surely every child has the right to have a Father
in the first place? And what of Father's rights? Shouldn't biological Fathers, at
the very least, have the right to be included on the birth certificate of their
own child!?
And what about the proposed amendments to the Anti-Discrimination Act that now afford
special 'protection' for Lesbian relationships despite the Act already having protection
for Homosexuals? Who's interest is this best serving, the child's or the Lesbian
adults? A possible unintended consequence could well make any public reference
to Dads and Fathers an act of discrimination.
I pray we don't see a day where a Father's three-legged race at a School Carnival
is cancelled because it is regarded discriminatory, or Father's Day itself is cancelled.
Fathers play a significant role in the lives of their children and the State should
be doing all they can to support and encourage that role, not undermining it or
that of the important role of parents, - a "mother" and a "father".
This Bill claims to protect children and remove discrimination but in effect it
does the opposite. It must be withdrawn so that its legal implications can be fully
evaluated. Church leaders have also expressed their concern over this controversial
Bill", Rev Nile said.

Fatherhood & Family under Threat
Children Need a Mother and a Father
'Father' to go from Birth Certificate is the headline of a story in the Herald Sun
on 18th May 2008. The Same Sex Relationship Bill 2008 will radically alter 57 pieces
of important legislation in a calculated attempt by the NSW Labor Government to
discriminate against men, derogate fathers, fragment families and break the hearts
of our children.
Children need a mother and a father. To deprive them of that right by government
regulation is callous and heartless. Legal advice has indicated that the proposed
bill, as it affects Section 24 of the Anti-Discrimination Act (1977), could make
the word 'father' discriminatory. Sadly this has already happened in California,
USA after the passing of similar legislation.
Studies from around the world show that children raised by their natural biological
mother and father fare much better than those who are not raised in a natural-parent
family.
A recent Australian study showed that children who do not live with their natural
biological father were between 17 and 77 times more likely to die from intentional
violence or accident. These facts are corroborated by academics from around the
world.
The NSW Labor Government needs to see that you care about your children. Mr Iemma
needs to know that the fathers and mothers of NSW will not accept such politically
correct madness. Children need a father and a mother.
Come to NSW Parliament House, Macquarie St, Sydney on 3rd June for the Dads4kids
Forum. Show the government that you care for our children.
Speakers: Warwick & Alison Marsh, Fatherhood Foundation; Wayne Butler, Shared
Parenting Council; Richard Egan, Festival of Light; Barry Williams, Lone Fathers
Association and many others from within the fatherhood/mens and pro-family movements
including pro-family state parliamentarians.
Registration for the Dads4kids Forum is essential as space is limited.

'Father' to go from birth certificates
____________________________________________________________________

Letter to the Editor
Illawarra Mercury29 May 2008
Dear Sir,
Fathers removed to protect lesbians! Under the smoke screen of the NSW state budget
which apparently comes out on 3rd June this anti-male NSW state Labor Government
apparently intends to push through the Same Sex Relationship Bill 2008. Fathers
believe the bill itself is an act of discrimination against males to protect lesbian
women from discrimination. It is believed that 57 pieces of legislation are being
amended and the word Father can be removed from public documents such as Birth Certificates,
but not the word Mother. After this state government's attack on public school teacher
transfers, privatisation of electricity which will prioritise profits over reliability
of supply for our industries, corruption in government and now this discrimination
against fathers the next state election can't come fast enough! Having been a strong
union supporter all my working life and having only voted conservative once in my
life when a previous state Labor government attacked public education (when the
Griener Government came in). It's time to throw the bad apples out! I have seen
too much discrimination against men! Families need fathers!

YoursBob Patrech

Open Letter to NSW Government
I am a father who for a decade has suffered the sustained attempt by my
ex-wife to deny me the ability to have a meaningful relationship with our
two children (now 16 & 11 years of age) as their father, except of course
financially through the Child Support system. Despite this wickedness of
denying two children relationship with their father, I vehemently remain
committed to the objective truth that I am the father of my children despite
the geographic distance & other barriers that currently separate us.
It is unconscionable that a Bill is being considered that will deny an
internationally recognised Human Right, legitimate heritage, from a cohort
of NSW children; a Bill that gives a higher priority to the lifestyle
choices of the biological mother & a third party who is not the biological
father of the child, & who can never be the child's father (or even
step-father) due to their gender.
Given the nature of the Bill, I pre-emptively say this email should not be
dismissed as homophobic discrimination. It is not homophobic to insist that
every person have the Human Right of heritage to their actual biological
male father & female mother.
Furthermore, a dangerous logical extension of the Bill is to condone
recognition of a child as having two fathers & no mother at all. I consider
this equally unconscionable. If one of the 'parents' recognised on a birth
certificate need not be a child's biological parents by heritage, then why
not both of them? Why not go one step further & condone situations such as
recognising the 'she wolf' on the birth certificates of Romulus & Remus?
My point is serious - by allowing fabrication of the genuine heritage of a
person on their birth certificate, we detrimentally impact the rightful
dignity these people should be entitled to & therefore we deny these fellow
citizens equal standing with the rest of society. If the State denies the
Human Right of genuine heritage from its citizens, we as a society
necessarily become accomplices in incrementally dehumanising those so
affected.
Of course not passing the Bill will upset some whose name will not be
permitted to be placed as a father or mother on a particular child's birth
certificate. However, they should be satisfied that they will continue to
possess equal legal & moral standing with respect the child that they
currently 'enjoy' with all but two people in the entire history of the world
(past, present & future), all of whom are not the mother or father of the
child by genuine heritage. Surely this current protection for every person
in NSW from having non-parents stated as such on their birth certificate, is
a correct & proper state of affairs that is not 'broken' & does not require
'fixing'.

</strong>here is no doubt that in times past, women were oppressed and mist=
reated by men. Unfortunately it still occurs today. As Bettina Arndt wrote,=
"No gender has a monopoly on vice." Things began to change for the better =
when Jesus Christ was born. In those days Jewish men had a prayer, "Thank G=
od I was not born a woman." Jesus cut across this derogation of womanhood c=
ompletely by making friends with women. He even did the unthinkable; he tal=
ked to a woman of a different race, a Samaritan. Scholars say that the them=
es of the book of Luke are 'the poor' and 'equality for women'. I find that=
hard to argue with. Wherever the message of God's unconditional love throu=
gh Jesus went, women have flourished.<br />&nbsp;<br />The lot of women imp=
roved even more&nbsp;with the Suffragette Movement. One of the earliest suf=
fragettes in the USA was Sojourner Truth, a black woman who was also a prea=
cher. In the late 1800s the Suffragettes in England, many of whom were infl=
uenced by their faith, worked with Keir Hardie, the founder of the Scottish=
Labour Party. Keir Hardie was also greatly inspired by his faith and was a=
great supporter of women receiving the vote on the same basis as men. This=
was ultimately achieved in England in 1918. It is interesting to note that=
New Zealand granted women the right to vote in 1893, whilst South Australi=
a became the first colony to allow women to vote in 1894. Federation in Aus=
tralia in 1902 secured the right for women to vote which put Australia well=
ahead of the rest of the world, but still behind New Zealand, much to the =
delight of our Kiwi friends.<br />&nbsp;<br />Many would argue that the fem=
inist movement of the late 60s, early 70s radical student revolution (of wh=
ich I was a part) really put women on the map.<br />&nbsp;<br />The questio=
n of course has to be asked, "What has happened to the men and fathers in t=
he process?" Men lag behind women in several areas of law and public policy=
. These are:<br />&nbsp;<br />1) Men's Health. Australia has a National Wom=
en's Health Policy (1989) but no national men's health policy. Men die almo=
st six years younger than women. Measured in every way, including governmen=
t spending, men are disadvantaged in the area of health. <br />&nbsp;<br />=
2) Family Law. In spite of the Federal government's recent changes, men and=
fathers face tremendous legal prejudice and anti-male bias.<br />&nbsp;<br=
/>3) Domestic Violence is another area where men are presumed guilty until=
proven innocent. Read our Special Feature to find out how this industry di=
splays an irrational bias against the male of the species.<br />&nbsp;<br /=
>4) Boys Education. In New South Wales, boys Higher School Certificate exam=
marks now lag 20% behind girls. At one stage boys used to do slightly bett=
er. There is a crisis in boys' education in Australia and in most western c=
ountries. Change is coming far too slowly.<br />&nbsp;<br />5) Paternity Fr=
aud. Many men suffer this indignity but the courts and governmental systems=
 protect the guilty party.<br />&nbsp;<br />6) Anti-Male Government Regulat=
ion and Bias. The classic case in point is the proposed Same Sex Relationsh=
ip Bill 2008 currently before the NSW Parliament. Please see News & Info fo=

dulum swing so far the other way? Perhaps Erin Pizzey, the woman who founde=
d the first women's refuge in the UK could give us some much needed insight=
:<br />During 1970, I was a young housewife with a husband, two children, t=
wo dogs and a cat . . .<br />. . . By the early seventies, a new movement f=
or women - demanding equality and rights - began to make headlines in the d=
aily newspapers . . . and I was on my way to join the Women's Liberation Mo=
vement . . . <br />. . . My fascination with this new movement lasted only =
a few months. At the huge 'collectives', I heard shrill women preaching hat=
red of the family. They said the family was not a safe place for women and =
children. I was horrified at their virulence and violent tendencies. I stoo=
d on the same platforms trying to reason with the leading lights of this ne=
w organization . . .<br />. . . I ended up being thrown out by the movement=
. My crime was to warn some of the women of the Women's Liberation Movement=
that if it persisted in cooperating with a plan to bomb Biba, I would call=
 the police . . . <br />. . . I decided that I was wasting my time trying t=
o influence what, to my mind, was a Marxist feminist movement touting for m=
oney from gullible women like myself . . .<br />. . . All through my career=
, as a journalist, a writer and a social reformer, I have been hounded and =
bullied by feminist women and their coat-trailing 'new men' . . . <br />. .=
. I watched horror stricken, as in home after home, I saw boys denied not =
only their access to their fathers, but also access to all that was normal =
and masculine in their lives &nbsp;. . . <br />. . . Both men and women hav=
e been guilty of politicizing human relationships. Human relationships are =
not a matter of political solutions. Any country that has tried to create a=
political solution to human problems has ended up with concentration camps=
and gulags. The deep wounds between men and women will take time to heal .=
 . .<br />. . . I believe that love between men and women is the strongest =
relationship on this earth. For now, we have to fight to protect family lif=
e. Hopefully, as we move into a new century, men and women can meet each ot=
her not only as equals, partners and friends but also as lovers.<br />&nbsp=

ughlin - Author, 'Married But Not Engaged'<br />April 29, 2008<br /><br />I=
n growing numbers, we're finally taking dance lessons. You could give both =
of us a drink with Sodium Pentothal in it and we still couldn't tell you wh=
y, after 15 years of talking about it, we finally bought those special shoe=
s and threw pride to the wind. Perhaps we weren't ready to push aside our f=
ear of public humiliation, which was actually kind of fun.<br /><br />Thoug=
h we still don't know what got us over the hump and onto the dance floor, w=
e now possess a deeper insight into what it means to lead and support each =
other in our evolving marriage thanks to some stunning visual displays.<br =
/><br />Tango is by far the most arresting dance we're learning. By arresti=
ng, we mean what other couples accomplish through unique roles, not what we=
are able to stumble through. These roles of men leading and women supporti=
ng, properly executed, give the impression that there are no roles at all. =
It's not obvious that anyone is leading or supporting. What you witness is =
the fruit of their abilities, which is delicious.<br /><br />You witness tw=
o people mustering their talent, power, and sensuality to create a level of=
physical and emotional intimacy that cannot be created by an individual da=
ncer. He steps forth and leads with intention; she supports his intention, =
enhancing their shared desire to create something grand. He leans into her,=
and she into him. Technically it's leadership. But practically, his behavi=
or looks more like guidance, provision, and care with style.<br /><br />Adv=
anced tango dancers, as in advanced marriages, ad lib their way across the =
floor because there are no shoe prints outlined in white to follow. They mo=
ve by the impulses of their hearts, by the room's physical borders, around =
others in their path, and by the direction of his firm hand and her recepti=
ve body. As in marriage, someone has to guide, or they will fall on one ano=
ther. It would just be a matter of time before everyone on the dance floor =
fell into a heap of twisted ankles and angry words.<br /><br />Her support =
and receptivity are not degrading. She glows with dignity. She honors him w=
ith donations of her trust. His lead is not stern or overbearing. He exudes=
reverence and, in doing so, cherishes her.<br /><br />He does not fall int=
o the sin of domination; she doesn't cower and become a passive accomplice =
to such ugliness. That would be heartbreaking to witness: He pushing her ar=
ound the floor with a scowl on his face, and she retaliating with spiteful =
words and punitive glares. A creation with so much potential for beauty wou=
ld become a foul display, another gender-war skirmish and hash mark on the =
wall of sexual disillusion. It would be like watching an anti-miracle of wi=
ne turned into stagnant pond water.<br />To read the full article <a track=

pg?a=3D1102113011991" align=3D"right"><br />Part 1<br />&nbsp;<br />On Inte=
rnational Women Day 2008, feminist activists and service providers scored y=
et another victory in their domestic violence campaign. Not only can men ac=
cused of domestic violence be expelled from their own houses, but domestic =
violence in New South Wales is to be made into a specific crime - presumabl=
y, one that carries greater odium and stigma than mere assault.<br />&nbsp;=
<br />However, for many victims of the most insidious, vicious and hidden f=
orms of domestic violence, this is probably a reason for commiseration rath=
er than celebration.<br />&nbsp;<br />For years now, domestic violence poli=
cy and services in Australia have been based on a 1970s paradigm that, in t=
urn, was based on a 1950s model of Western society. Domestic violence polic=
y and service provision in Australia is overwhelmingly dominated by the "Du=
luth method" which claims that domestic violence is something that men do t=
o women because of the patriarchal society in which we live and the politic=
al, social and cultural control that men exercise over women. Male batterer=
s, they claim, operate from a position of socially-sanctioned power, and th=
erefore, the way to end domestic violence is to end men's sense of privileg=
e.<br />&nbsp;<br />Few would seriously recognize this model of society as =
the one in which we live in Australia in 2008. To take an example, if men w=
ere "privileged", we would expect them to have preferred access to higher e=
ducation. Yet there are far more women enrolled in Australian universities =
than there are men. In respect of school retention rates, the gap is in dou=
ble figures - around 69% for boys compared to over 80% for girls at the nat=
ional level. I say good luck to the girls! But it hardly supports the notio=
n of patriarchy.<br />&nbsp;<br />Similarly, few would accept that in relat=
ion to the laws governing the dissolution of marriage, dominant culture and=
power relationships privilege men over women. If we indeed live in a patri=
archal society in Australia, North America and Europe in 2008, it is precis=
ely in the realm of family law, divorce and inheritance that you would expe=
ct to find these excesses of male dominance just like in all other examples=
of patriarchal society.<br />&nbsp;<br />However, the reality is quite the=
opposite. Since 2005, the Australian Government has even been forced to sp=
end hundreds of millions of dollars to, in fact, redress the disadvantages =
suffered by men at the dissolution of marriage, including with respect to c=
are and support arrangements for children and alternatives to the court sys=
tem that were quite literally driving men to suicide.<br />&nbsp;<br />The =
changes being introduced to the child support system, in particular, are ba=
sed on a recognition that Australian society has changed drastically in a p=
eriod of just two decades since the original scheme was introduced. Biologi=
cal differences allowing, women are now rightly expected to participate in =
paid work to help support their families financially. And men are expected =
to pull their weight in household matters and with respect to the care of c=
hildren. This is a "win-win" situation that early feminist activists ought =
rightly to be proud of - not only for the social gains but also for the eco=
nomic advances made possible as a result of women's open participation in p=
ublic life.<br />&nbsp;<br />If we accept these changes to society as self-=
evident, then we must also accept as dated the Duluth model's diagnosis of =
domestic violence as resulting from men's socially-sanctioned power over wo=
men. Or, to take this model to its logical conclusion, if the laws of marri=
age, divorce and custody rights are perceived to favour women, couldn't we =
also expect women to engage in abusive "controlling" behaviour proportionat=
e to the perceived power imbalance and advantages they could expect to obta=
in in terms of money and custody of children at the end of a relationship? =
Yes, we could and we have. If this is the case, shouldn't there also be ser=
vices in places that educate women about the harm caused by their controlli=
ng behaviour?<br />&nbsp;<br />Even if Duluth-modeled family violence servi=
ce providers accept that changes have occurred in Western society in the la=
st 40 years, they will probably move on to the 'r' word - research. Doesn't=
nearly all the research support the view that domestic violence overwhelmi=
ngly involves male perpetrators and female victims?<br />&nbsp;<br />Well, =
not exactly. While cases reported to police and emergency services do mostl=
y involve female victims at the hands of male perpetrators, the more rigoro=
us population-based studies into the incidence and nature of domestic viole=
nce in English-speaking countries tend to present a far more gender-neutral=
picture of family violence.<br />Probably the best and most recent study o=
f this phenomenon is "Partner Violence and Mental Health Outcomes in a New =
Zealand Birth Cohort" by Fergusson, Horwood & Ridder published in the Journ=
al of Family and Marriage (vol. 67. no. 5, Dec 2005, pp. 1103-1119).<br />&=
nbsp;<br />This research examines in depth the domestic violence experience=
s a cohort of young New Zealanders selected at random based on the birth re=
cords of a Christchurch hospital. The key findings of the study were that d=
omestic conflict (ranging from minor psychological abuse to severe assault)=
is common, that men and women report similar incidence and experiences of =
victimization and perpetration of domestic violence and that exposure to do=
mestic violence is significantly related to increased risk of major depress=
ion and suicidal ideation.<br />&nbsp;<br />This study is hardly a statisti=
cal outlier. In fact, Martin Fiebert of the Department of Psychology, Calif=
ornia State University, Long Beach has compiled a list of 209 scholarly inv=
estigations (161 empirical studies and 48 reviews and/or analyses) indicati=
ng that women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in=
their relationships with their spouses or male partners (see http://www.cs=
ulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm).<br />&nbsp;<br />To be continued next week.=

rif">SEATTLE-Domestic violence can happen to men, not only to women, accord=
ing to Group Health research in the June American Journal of Preventive Med=
icine. "Domestic violence in men is under-studied and often hidden - much a=
s it was in women 10 years ago," said study leader Robert J. Reid, MD, PhD,=
an associate investigator at the Group Health Center for Health Studies. "=
We want abused men to know they're not alone." His findings confirm some co=
mmon beliefs but also debunk five myths about abuse in men:=20
<div>&nbsp;</div><br /><strong>Myth 1:</strong> Few men experience domestic=
violence. Many do. In-depth phone interviews with over 400 randomly sample=
d adult male Group Health patients surprised Dr. Reid and his colleagues: 5=
% had experienced domestic violence in the past year, 10% in the past five =
years, and 29% over their lifetimes. The researchers defined domestic viole=
nce to include nonphysical abuse - threats, chronic disparaging remarks, or=
controlling behavior - as well as physical abuse: slapping, hitting, kicki=
ng, or forced sex.=20
<div>&nbsp;</div><br /><strong>Myth 2:</strong> Abuse of men has no serious=
effects. The researchers found domestic violence is associated with seriou=
s, long-term effects on men's mental health. Women are more likely than men=
to experience more severe physical abuse, said Dr. Reid. "But even nonphys=
ical abuse can do lasting damage." Depressive symptoms were nearly three ti=
mes as common in older men who had experienced abuse than in those who hadn=
't, with much more severe depression in the men who had been abused physica=
lly.=20
<div>&nbsp;</div><br /><strong>Myth 3:</strong> Abused men don't stay, beca=
use they're free to leave. In fact, men may stay for years with their abusi=
ve partners. "We know that many women may have trouble leaving abusive rela=
tionships, especially if they're caring for young children and not working =
outside the home," said Dr. Reid. "We were surprised to find that most men =
in abusive relationships also stay, through multiple episodes, for years." =
<br /><strong>Myth 4:</strong> Domestic violence affects only poor people. =
The study actually showed it to be an equal - opportunity scourge. "As we f=
ound in our previous research with women experiencing domestic violence, th=
is is a common problem affecting people in all walks of life," said Dr. Rei=
d. "Our patients at Group Health have health insurance and easy access to h=
ealth care, and their employment rate and average income, education level, =
and age are higher than those of the rest of the U.S. population."=20
<div>&nbsp;</div><br /><strong>Myth 5:</strong> Ignoring it will make it go=
away. Not so. "We doctors hardly ever ask our male patients about being ab=
used - and they seldom tell us," said Dr. Reid. "Many abused men feel asham=
ed because of societal expectations for men to be tough and in control." Yo=
unger men were twice as likely as men age 55 or older to report recent abus=
e. "That may be because older men are even more reluctant to talk about it,=
" he added.=20
<div>&nbsp;</div><br />This study extends Group Health's research on domest=
ic violence, a.k.a. intimate partner violence. The team's previous publicat=
ions have documented the prevalence, persistence, and health effects of dom=
estic violence on women. In the current study, they asked men the same ques=
tions that they had asked of women. "Our team is concerned about abuse of p=
eople: of women as well as men," Dr. Reid added. "We do not want to downpla=
y the seriousness of domestic violence as experienced by women."<br />Dr. R=
eid said more research is needed to determine the best ways for doctors to =
ask men if they have experienced domestic violence - and how best to help t=
hem into couples counseling, leaving their partners, or getting protection =
orders.=20
<div>&nbsp;</div>&nbsp;<br />The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality=
and the Group Health Center for Health Studies funded this work, co-author=
ed by Melissa Anderson, MS, Paul Fishman, PhD, David Carrell, PhD, and Robe=
rt Thompson, MD of the Group Health Center for Health Studies; Amy Bonomi, =
PhD, MPH, now an Ohio State University associate professor of human develop=
ment & family science in Columbus; and Group Health Center for Health Studi=
es affiliate scientific investigator Frederick Rivara, MD, MPH, of Harborvi=
ew Injury Prevention and Research Center and the University of Washington.=

<div>&nbsp;</div><br />The Rev Fred Nile, Leader of the Christian Democrati=
c Party, has denounced a NSW Government Bill as another ill-conceived attem=
pt at social engineering. <strong>The Miscellaneous Acts Amendment (Same Se=
x Relationships) Bill,</strong> that is likely to come before Parliament ne=
xt week, seeks to remove all reference to '<strong>fathers'</strong> and <s=
trong>'paternity'</strong> from 57 Acts of Law so that Lesbian defacto part=
ners may be afforded the same legal status as biological Fathers.<br />"The=
Iemma ALP NSW State Government has introduced another controversial homose=
xual Bill, which will amend 57 NSW Laws and remove all references to 'Fathe=
rhood' or 'Paternity'. The Government have claimed that they have done so b=
ecause of concerns over&nbsp;equality&nbsp;and the rights of children that =
need protecting", stated Rev Fred Nile <br />"The reality is, that in the h=
aste to promote this latest attempt at social engineering, significant over=
sights have been made regarding the inherent problems within the proposed l=
egislation. They speak of the rights of a child, but what of the child's ri=
ght to know who their father is. Surely every child has the right to have a=
Father in the first place? And what of Father's rights? Shouldn't biologic=
al Fathers, at the very least, have the right to be included on the birth c=
ertificate of their own child!?<br />And what about the proposed amendments=
to the Anti-Discrimination Act that now afford special 'protection' for Le=
sbian relationships despite the Act already having protection for Homosexua=
ls? Who's interest is this best serving, the child's or the Lesbian adults?=
A possible unintended consequence could well make any public reference to =
Dads and Fathers an act of discrimination. <br />I pray we don't see a day =
where a Father's three-legged race at a School Carnival is cancelled becaus=
e it is regarded discriminatory, or Father's Day itself is cancelled. Fathe=
rs play a significant role in the lives of their children and the State sho=
uld be doing all they can to support and encourage that role, not undermini=
ng it or that of the important role of parents, - a "mother" and a "father"=
. <br />This Bill claims to protect children and remove discrimination but&=
nbsp;in effect it does the opposite. It must be withdrawn so that its legal=
implications can be fully evaluated. Church leaders have also expressed th=
eir concern over this controversial Bill", Rev Nile said.&nbsp; <br /></fon=

that right by government regulation is callous and heartless. Legal advice=
has indicated that the proposed bill, as it affects Section 24 of the Anti=

dly this has already happened in California, USA after the passing of simil=

<div>&nbsp;</div><strong>Open Letter to NSW Government<br /></strong>I am a=
father who for a decade has suffered the sustained attempt by my<br />ex-w=
ife to deny me the ability to have a meaningful relationship with our<br />=
two children (now 16 & 11 years of age) as their father, except of course<b=
r />financially through the Child Support system. Despite this wickedness o=
f<br />denying two children relationship with their father, I vehemently re=
main<br />committed to the objective truth that I am the father of my child=
ren despite<br />the geographic distance & other barriers that currently se=
parate us.<br />It is unconscionable that a Bill is being considered that w=
ill deny an<br />internationally recognised Human Right, legitimate heritag=
e, from a cohort<br />of NSW children; a Bill that gives a higher priority =
to the lifestyle<br />choices of the biological mother & a third party who =
is not the biological<br />father of the child, & who can never be the chil=
d's father (or even<br />step-father) due to their gender.<br />Given the n=
ature of the Bill, I pre-emptively say this email should not be<br />dismis=
sed as homophobic discrimination. It is not homophobic to insist that<br />=
every person have the Human Right of heritage to their actual biological<br=
 />male father & female mother.<br />Furthermore, a dangerous logical exten=
sion of the Bill is to condone<br />recognition of a child as having two fa=
thers & no mother at all. I consider<br />this equally unconscionable. If o=
ne of the 'parents' recognised on a birth<br />certificate need not be a ch=
ild's biological parents by heritage, then why<br />not both of them? Why n=
ot go one step further & condone situations such as<br />recognising the 's=
he wolf' on the birth certificates of Romulus & Remus?<br />My point is ser=
ious - by allowing fabrication of the genuine heritage of a<br />person on =
their birth certificate, we detrimentally impact the rightful<br />dignity =
these people should be entitled to & therefore we deny these fellow<br />ci=
tizens equal standing with the rest of society. If the State denies the<br =
/>Human Right of genuine heritage from its citizens, we as a society<br />n=
ecessarily become accomplices in incrementally dehumanising those so<br />a=
ffected.<br />Of course not passing the Bill will upset some whose name wil=
l not be<br />permitted to be placed as a father or mother on a particular =
child's birth<br />certificate. However, they should be satisfied that they=
will continue to<br />possess equal legal & moral standing with respect th=
e child that they<br />currently 'enjoy' with all but two people in the ent=
ire history of the world<br />(past, present & future), all of whom are not=
the mother or father of the<br />child by genuine heritage. Surely this cu=
rrent protection for every person<br />in NSW from having non-parents state=
d as such on their birth certificate, is<br />a correct & proper state of a=
ffairs that is not 'broken' & does not require<br />'fixing'.=20
