Bringing up a family can be challenging at the best of times. These days we=
seem to live in an anti-family society that seems to be hell-bent on the d=
estruction of the natural family. If it isn't some Hollywood producer who h=
as been married for the seventh time, producing celluloid hate mail against=
marriage and true love, it's politicians bending over backwards to please =
powerful minorities who seem to have a pathological predisposition against =
our children before they are even born, or even academics firing salvos aga=
inst the natural family whilst embracing all sorts of perversions and anoma=
lies which encourage ever increasing rates of sexual abuse of our children.=
Even the very notion of 'family' is under great attack.

Why is this so?

The causes are many and varied but one of the main reasons is our success a=
s a society. With success comes affluence and with affluence comes self-cen=
tredness and apathy. To embrace selfishness and narcissism, we must reject =
marriage and family, because to accept marriage is to accept love and to ac=
cept love means to sacrifice self. The same goes for family. If you want t=
o learn unselfishness, get married and have children.

As a young man I remember people asking me, "How many children do you have?=
" When I replied, "Five," I could almost hear them thinking, "What sort of =
idiot do we have here?" The jokes were many, "Must be a Catholic, ha ha. Do=
n't you have a TV? ho, ho." I'm not a Catholic, but I do have a faith. I al=
so have a TV, although I try not to watch it too much.

The attack against the family in recent years also has an ideological basis=
. In 1848 Karl Marx and Frederick Engels released the Communist Manifesto.

The over-arching purpose of communism could be argued as noble, that is, to=
produce a society that owned everything in common and where everyone was e=
qual. From Marx & Engel's point of view this could only come about by holdi=
ng strictly to three basic tenets.

1. The elimination of private property.
2. The elimination of the family unit.
3. The elimination of the 'opiate of the people' - religion.

In communism, it was all about the evolutionary process where the end justi=
fies the means and so a fourth principle was rigorously adhered to, that is=
, the elimination of anyone who disagrees with the first three tenets. Terr=
y O'Neil writes in REPORT Newsmagazine<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=3D001CASrOWW=

...Communism gave rise to some of the most murderous regimes in the histor=
y of the world. As documented in The Black Book of Communism, an important =
work first published in France in 1997, Marxist regimes led to the death of=
 at least 100 million victims.

Communism has committed a multitude of crimes not only against individual h=
uman beings but also against world civilization and national cultures," wri=
tes Stephane Courtoris, one of six co-authors, all of whom describe themsel=
ves as former Communists or 'fellow travellers' with Communism.

My own background as a student revolutionary and co-worker with communists =
is not something I am necessarily proud of. I was idealistic. I thought uto=
pia could be manufactured by man. My dad used to say that communism was 'ru=
le by the gun'. I should have listened to him. Jesus said, 'those who live =
by the sword die by the sword'. The reality is that communism, as proposed =
by Karl Marx, was a monumental failure. The Marxist goal to eliminate and d=
estroy marriage and family has been very successful. Justice Lionel Murphy,=
the inspiration behind the now discredited Family Law Act 1975, took great=
inspiration from the soviet model of the state as father. The reality is t=
hat the state can never replace father or mother. Try as they will, the nat=
ural family will always be the foundation for a just and equitable society.

Lovework

I know you probably aren't a big reader, but do yourself a favour and read =
Prof Allan Carlson's brilliant speech about the natural family in this week=
's Special Feature, delivered at the recent Australian Family Association C=
onference in Perth, where I was also a contributor. It is important for us =
to know what we are up against.

But always remember that the greatest weapon you have in the battle for the=
family is love, because love is the greatest force in the universe.

Yours for more love

Most divorced dads want more time with children
By Patricia Karvelas, Political correspondent
18 October 2008 The Australian

Three-quarters of divorced fathers want to have custody of their children f=
or at least 50 per cent of the time, while as many as 36 per cent wish they=
could have their children all of the time.

Based on a survey of 300 child-support payers, mostly fathers, and 300 paye=
es, mostly mothers, the research shows that some women also want less time =
with their children and are willing to share the load.

According to the survey, conducted by the Child Support Agency, 61 per cent=
of parents (mostly women) receiving money from their former partners said =
they would ideally like to have their children all of the time.

But significantly, 36 per cent were happy to share their children 50 per ce=
nt of the time or more.

This is inconsistent with reality. At the moment, the overall main carer ra=
tio is about 87 per cent women and 13 per cent men. The figures reveal that=
a lot would be willing to have shared arrangements, but do not currently h=
ave them.

Human Services Minister Joe Ludwig said it demonstrated that fathers wanted=
more to do with their children.

"The striking changes in the roles of men and women in Australian society a=
re being reflected in parenting after separation," Senator Ludwig said. "Mo=
st separated dads are working hard to support their kids and the survey sho=
ws a large percentage want more to do in their children's lives."

The survey commissioned by the Child Support Agency charts that there were =
strong, positive changes in how parents viewed their relationship with thei=
r former partner, over a six-month period that included the introduction in=
July of a new system for calculating child support payments.

Under the new system, the greater the proportion of time the paying parent =
has custody of their child, the less their repayments are.

In August, 43 per cent of parents said they were very likely to deal with t=
he other parent in a businesslike way - up from 26 per cent in February.

"That represents 250,000 mums and dads who now say they've improved the way=
they deal with each other," Senator Ludwig said.

The survey also shows a dramatic drop in the number of parents saying they =
were very unlikely to deal in a businesslike way with their former partner.=
That figure has fallen from 45 per cent to 26 per cent over the same perio=
d.

"The new child support system is designed to cement these social trends tow=
ards greater shared parental responsibility," the senator said.

"Some fathers are responding to the new child support system, which encoura=
ges a greater proportion of shared care."

As the new scheme is bedded down, Senator Ludwig expected these positive so=
cial trends to improve further.

August 1942 (continued)

But at 8 A.M. there was a commotion. I heard shouts, and saw people running=
every which way through camp. I caught up with my brothers. Russian troops=
had liberated the camp! The gates swung open. Everyone was running, so I d=
id too. Amazingly, all of my brothers had survived; I'm not sure how. But I=
knew that the girl with the apples had been the key to my survival.

In a place where evil seemed triumphant, one person's goodness had saved my=
life, had given me hope in a place where there was none. My mother had pro=
mised to send me an angel, and the angel had come.

Eventually I made my way to England where I was sponsored by a Jewish chari=
ty, put up in a hostel with other boys who had survived the Holocaust, and =
trained in electronics. Then I came to America, where my brother Sam had al=
ready moved. I served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, and returned=
to New York City after two years.

By August 1957 I'd opened my own electronics repair shop. I was starting to=
 settle in.

One day, my friend Sid who I knew from England called me.
'I've got a date. She's got a Polish friend. Let's double date.' A blind da=
te? Nah, that wasn't for me.

But Sid kept pestering me, and a few days later we headed up to the Bronx t=
o pick up his date and her friend Roma.

I had to admit, for a blind date this wasn't so bad. Roma was a nurse at a =
Bronx hospital. She was kind and smart. Beautiful, too, with swirling brown=
curls and green, almond-shaped eyes that sparkled with life.

The four of us drove out to Coney Island. Roma was easy to talk to, easy to=
be with. Turned out she was wary of blind dates too!

We were both just doing our friends a favor. We took a stroll on the boardw=
alk, enjoying the salty Atlantic breeze, and then had dinner by the shore. =
I couldn't remember having a better time.

We piled back into Sid's car, Roma and I sharing the backseat.

As European Jews who had survived the war, we were aware that much had been=
left unsaid between us. She broached the subject, 'Where were you,' she as=
ked softly, 'during the war?'
'The camps,' I said. The terrible memories still vivid, the irreparable los=
s. I had tried to forget. But you can never forget.

She nodded. 'My family was hiding on a farm in Germany , not far from Berli=
n,' she told me. 'My father knew a priest, and he got us Aryan papers.'

I imagined how she must have suffered too, fear, a constant companion. And =
yet here we were both survivors, in a new world. 'There was a camp next to =
the farm.' Roma continued. 'I saw a boy there and I would throw him apples =
every day.'

What an amazing coincidence that she had helped some other boy. 'What did h=
e look like?' I asked.
'He was tall, skinny, and hungry. I must have seen him every day for six mo=
nths.'
My heart was racing. I couldn't believe it. This couldn't be.
'Did he tell you one day not to come back because he was leaving Schlieben?=
'
Roma looked at me in amazement.
'Yes!'
'That was me!'
I was ready to burst with joy and awe, flooded with emotions. I couldn't be=
lieve it! My angel.
'I'm not letting you go.' I said to Roma. And in the back of the car on tha=
t blind date, I proposed to her. I didn't want to wait.

'You're crazy!' she said.. But she invited me to meet her parents for Shabb=
at dinner the following week.

There was so much I looked forward to learning about Roma, but the most imp=
ortant things I always knew: her steadfastness, her goodness. For many mont=
hs, in the worst of circumstances, she had come to the fence and given me h=
ope. Now that I'd found her again, I could never let her go.

That day, she said yes. And I kept my word. After nearly 50 years of marria=
ge, two children and three grandchildren, I have never let her go.

Herman Rosenblat of Miami Beach, Florida.

This story is being made into a movie called 'The Fence'.

The Natural Family in an Unnatural World
Perth, Western Australia
October 18, 2008
 By Allan Carlson

Part 1.

That the family system of the Western nations is in crisis seems clear. Hi=
storically low birth rates, the rapid spread of cohabitation, the legal dis=
mantling of the institution of marriage, and climbing divorce are all signs=
of a fundamental turning point in the social development of the West.

Certain powerful voices among the once Christian nations actually welcome t=
hese changes, as signs of liberation. They favor the Swedish model of soci=
al democracy, where the old socialist dream of dismantling the family has f=
inally come true. They extol the leveling of the sexes, and the disappeara=
nce of potent labels such as "husband" and "wife," "mother" and "father." =
They celebrate the disappearance of marriage as a meaningful cultural and l=
egal structure with claims of its own on society and individuals. They rel=
ish the elimination of free homes, once rich in function and loyalties, to =
be replaced by governmental structures and the sole bond of the individual =
to the state. They seek the essential collectivization of children.

As economic determinists of the closeted neo-Marxist sort, these same voice=
s also claim to be in the vanguard of history. They believe that the mater=
ial forces of post-industrial society require this evolution of a new form =
of living: a post-family model which reconciles the atomistic individual wi=
th the total state. In pursuing this ideology, they have willingly and ope=
nly sacrificed the natural order, building an unnatural world in its place.=
..

I believe that this can be done by focusing on the phrase, "the natural fam=
ily." Words convey ideas...and ideals. And we are now engaged in a battle=
over the meaning of key words. In May 1998, a Working Group of the World =
Congress of Families - including Australia's Peter Westmore - met in a Seco=
nd Century B.C. room in the ancient city of Rome, to craft a definition of =
this term:

The natural family is the fundamental social unit, inscribed in human natur=
e, and centered around the voluntary union of a man and a woman in a lifelo=
ng covenant of marriage for the purposes of satisfying the longings of the =
human heart to give and receive love, welcoming and ensuring the full physi=
cal and emotional development of children, sharing a home that serves as th=
e center for social, educational, economic, and spiritual life, building st=
rong bonds among the generations to pass on a way of life that has transcen=
dent meaning, and extending a hand of compassion to individuals and househo=
lds whose circumstances fall short of these ideals.

In expanding on this phrase, I want to highlight recognition of the natural=
family in five ways: as part of the created order; as imprinted on our na=
tures; as the source of bountiful joy; as the fountain of new life; and as =
the bulwark of liberty.

First, PART OF THE NATURAL CREATED ORDER

. . . What does science teach? The founders of modern anthropology also he=
ld that marriage is an unchanging institution, universal in its basic eleme=
nts and common to all humanity. As Edward Westermarck explained a century =
ago: "Among the lowest savages, as well as the most civilized races of men,=
we find the family consisting of parents and children, and the father as i=
ts protector." Marriage bound this family system together, uniting 'a regu=
lated sexual relation' with 'economic obligations. [i]. . .

Second, the natural family is IMPRINTED ON OUR NATURE AS HUMANS

While the main current of Western philosophy and social science rushed towa=
rd Marxist forms of understanding in the late 19th and 20th centuries, a di=
ssenting school of sociology offered an alternate analysis, one focused on =
humankind's familial nature. The first of these dissenters was the French =
academic, Frederic Le Play, active in the 1870's and 1880's.[ii]

Le Play argued that human behavior did not follow the theoretical schemes o=
f his liberal and socialist contempories. Rather, he identified and sought=
to explain the close relation between what he called 'la famille soudre'-o=
r the stem family-and historical examples of a stable, creative prosperity.=
This stem family held the nuclear dyad of husband and wife at its core, y=
et also embraced extended kin. He argued that this family form, "by a rema=
rkable favor of Providence has within its very structure the beneficient qu=
alities of the individual and those of association."

Three great 20th Century sociologists based their efforts on the legacy of =
Le Play: Carle Zimmerman; Pitirim Sorokin; and Robert Nisbet.

Carle Zimmerman, Professor of Sociology at America's Harvard University, wr=
ote Family and Civilization in 1947. It traced the course of family struct=
ures throughout the globe and across the millennia. In describing the pros=
pects for family reconstruction, Zimmerman embraced Le Play's concept of th=
e stem family, re-labelling it the domestic family.

Importantly, Zimmerman insisted that this domestic family model could be fo=
und "among all people who combine the benefits of agriculture, industry, an=
d settled life with the commonsense idea of defending their private life fr=
om the domination of legislators, from the invasion of bureaucrats, and fro=
m the exaggerations of the manufacturing regime."

Sorokin was born and educated in Russia, but expelled by the Bolsheviks in =
1921, Sorokin shared with Zimmerman a common debt to Le Play, accepting his=
concept of the stem family as the most stable, creative, and natural socia=
l form. In his book, The Crisis of Our Age, Sorokin emphasized the tie of =
mounting social turmoil to shrinking family size and the atrophy of family =
functions, most notably education. The only feasible course was to launch =
a new cultural order. As he put it:
A transformation of the forms of social relationship, by replacing the pres=
ent compulsory and contractual relationships with purer and more godly fami=
listic relationships, is the order of the day....Not only are they the nobl=
est of all relationships, but under the circumstances there is no way out o=
f the present triumph of barbarian force but through the realm of familisti=
c relationships.

The third great sociologist in this tradition was Robert Nisbet, whom I cou=
nted as a friend and mentor. He is best known as the author of the books, =
The Quest for Community and The Twilight of Authority.[iii] In the latter =
volume, published in 1975, Nisbet offered a passage of profound importance.=
"It should be obvious," he says, "that family, not the individual, is the=
real molecule of society, the key link of the social chain of being. It i=
s inconceivable to me that either intellectual growth or social order or th=
e roots of liberty can possibly be maintained among a people unless the kin=
ship tie is strong and has both functional significance and symbolic author=
ity."[iv]

Dear Dads4Kids

I have never heard of you organisation until I saw the add on the tele toda=
y. What a great thing that you are trying to achieve, the sad truth is that=
not all kids will get a great start, but all we can do is try. I would lik=
e to get more info and more involved in this as I feel that's the least we =
can do for our children, not only our son, but maybe help some that are not=
so fortunate to have a family.

Chris

I'd like to say I appreciate the good intention of the Fatherhood Foundatio=
n but I'm concerned by your choice of Matthew Hayden as the person to deliv=
er your message. In fact I feel insulted by the image of someone who spends=
at best a total of four months a year at home with his family telling me h=
ow important it is to spend time with my children. My wife and I have made =
a choice to earn less income to be able to spend every day with our kids an=
d to be available for sport every weekend.

Matthew Hayden has chosen an extremely well paid profession that sees him s=
pending most nights each year at a hotel bar with his work mates usually in=
another country. The Foundation must believe most dads are totally stupid =
not to see the hypocrisy there. My son and I are cricket fans and we spent =
a lot of time each week with cricket training and games but I find your ads=
 annoying!

Thanks for your time,

erdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif"><font color=3D"#000000">Bringing =
up a family can be challenging at the best of times. These days we seem to =
live in an anti-family society that seems to be hell-bent on the destructio=
n of the natural family. If it isn't some Hollywood producer who has been m=
arried for the seventh time, producing celluloid hate mail against marriage=
and true love, it's politicians bending over backwards to please powerful =
minorities who seem to have a pathological predisposition against our child=
ren before they are even born, or even academics firing salvos against the =
natural family whilst embracing all sorts of perversions and anomalies whic=
h encourage ever increasing rates of sexual abuse of our children. Even the=
very notion of 'family' is under great attack.<br />&nbsp;<br />Why is thi=
s so?<br />&nbsp;<br />The causes are many and varied but one of the main r=
easons is our success as a society. With success comes affluence and with a=
ffluence comes self-centredness and apathy. To embrace selfishness and narc=
issism, we must reject marriage and family, because to accept marriage is t=
o accept love and to accept love means to sacrifice self.&nbsp; The same go=
es for family. If you want to learn unselfishness, get married and have chi=
ldren.<br />&nbsp;<br />As a young man I remember people asking me, "How ma=
ny children do you have?" When I replied, "Five," I could almost hear them =
thinking, "What sort of idiot do we have here?" The jokes were many, "Must =
be a Catholic, ha ha. Don't you have a TV? ho, ho." I'm not a Catholic, but=
I do have a faith. I also have a TV, although I try not to watch it too mu=
ch. <br />&nbsp;<br />The attack against the family in recent years also ha=
s an ideological basis. In 1848 Karl Marx and Frederick Engels released the=
 Communist Manifesto.<br />&nbsp;<br />The over-arching purpose of communis=
m could be argued as noble, that is, to produce a society that owned everyt=
hing in common and where everyone was equal. From Marx & Engel's point of v=
iew this could only come about by holding strictly to three basic tenets.<b=
r />&nbsp;<br />1. The elimination of private property.<br />2. The elimina=
tion of the family unit.<br />3. The elimination of the 'opiate of the peop=
le' - religion.<br />&nbsp;<br />In communism, it was all about the evoluti=
onary process where the end justifies the means and so a fourth principle w=
as rigorously adhered to, that is, the elimination of anyone who disagrees =
with the first three tenets. Terry O'Neil writes in <a track=3D"on" href=3D=

munism gave rise to some of the most murderous regimes in the history of th=
e world. As documented in The Black Book of Communism, an important work fi=
rst published in France in 1997, Marxist regimes led to the death of at lea=
st 100 million victims.<br /><br />Communism has committed a multitude of c=
rimes not only against individual human beings but also against world civil=
ization and national cultures," writes Stephane Courtoris, one of six co-au=
thors, all of whom describe themselves as former Communists or 'fellow trav=
ellers' with Communism.<br /><br /><br />My own background as a student rev=
olutionary and co-worker with communists is not something I am necessarily =
proud of. I was idealistic. I thought utopia could be manufactured by man. =
My dad used to say that communism was 'rule by the gun'. I should have list=
ened to him. Jesus said, 'those who live by the sword die by the sword'. Th=
e reality is that communism, as proposed by Karl Marx, was a monumental fai=
lure. The Marxist goal to eliminate and destroy marriage and family has bee=
n very successful. Justice Lionel Murphy, the inspiration behind the now di=
scredited Family Law Act 1975, took great inspiration from the soviet model=
of the state as father. The reality is that the state can never replace fa=
ther or mother. Try as they will, the natural family will always be the fou=

<div><strong><font size=3D"4">Most divorced dads want more time with childr=
en</font></strong> <br />By Patricia Karvelas, Political correspondent <br =
/>18 October 2008&nbsp;&nbsp; The Australian<br /><br />Three-quarters of d=
ivorced fathers want to have custody of their children for at least 50 per =
cent of the time, while as many as 36 per cent wish they could have their c=
hildren all of the time. <br /><br />Based on a survey of 300 child-support=
payers, mostly fathers, and 300 payees, mostly mothers, the research shows=
that some women also want less time with their children and are willing to=
share the load. <br /><br />According to the survey, conducted by the Chil=
d Support Agency, 61 per cent of parents (mostly women) receiving money fro=
m their former partners said they would ideally like to have their children=
all of the time. <br /><br />But significantly, 36 per cent were happy to =
share their children 50 per cent of the time or more. <br /><br />This is i=
nconsistent with reality. At the moment, the overall main carer ratio is ab=
out 87 per cent women and 13 per cent men. The figures reveal that a lot wo=
uld be willing to have shared arrangements, but do not currently have them.=
<br /><br />Human Services Minister Joe Ludwig said it demonstrated that f=
athers wanted more to do with their children. <br /><br />"The striking cha=
nges in the roles of men and women in Australian society are being reflecte=
d in parenting after separation," Senator Ludwig said. "Most separated dads=
are working hard to support their kids and the survey shows a large percen=
tage want more to do in their children's lives." <br /><br />The survey com=
missioned by the Child Support Agency charts that there were strong, positi=
ve changes in how parents viewed their relationship with their former partn=
er, over a six-month period that included the introduction in July of a new=
system for calculating child support payments. <br /><br />Under the new s=
ystem, the greater the proportion of time the paying parent has custody of =
their child, the less their repayments are. <br /><br />In August, 43 per c=
ent of parents said they were very likely to deal with the other parent in =
a businesslike way - up from 26 per cent in February. <br /><br />"That rep=
resents 250,000 mums and dads who now say they've improved the way they dea=
l with each other," Senator Ludwig said. <br /><br />The survey also shows =
a dramatic drop in the number of parents saying they were very unlikely to =
deal in a businesslike way with their former partner. That figure has falle=
n from 45 per cent to 26 per cent over the same period. <br /><br />"The ne=
w child support system is designed to cement these social trends towards gr=
eater shared parental responsibility," the senator said. <br /><br />"Some =
fathers are responding to the new child support system, which encourages a =
greater proportion of shared care." <br /><br />As the new scheme is bedded=
down, Senator Ludwig expected these positive social trends to improve furt=
her.<br /><br /><br /></div></font></div></font></font></td></tr></table><a=

 />Perth, Western Australia<br /></font></strong>October 18, 2008<br />&nbs=
p;By Allan Carlson<br />&nbsp;<br />Part 1.<br />&nbsp;<br />That the famil=
y system of the Western nations is in crisis seems clear.&nbsp; Historicall=
y low birth rates, the rapid spread of cohabitation, the legal dismantling =
of the institution of marriage, and climbing divorce are all signs of a fun=
damental turning point in the social development of the West.<br />&nbsp;&n=
bsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Certain powerful voice=
s among the once Christian nations actually welcome these changes, as signs=
of liberation.&nbsp; They favor the Swedish model of social democracy, whe=
re the old socialist dream of dismantling the family has finally come true.=
&nbsp; They extol the leveling of the sexes, and the disappearance of poten=
t labels such as "husband" and "wife," "mother" and "father."&nbsp; They ce=
lebrate the disappearance of marriage as a meaningful cultural and legal st=
ructure with claims of its own on society and individuals.&nbsp; They relis=
h the elimination of free homes, once rich in function and loyalties, to be=
replaced by governmental structures and the sole bond of the individual to=
the state.&nbsp; They seek the essential collectivization of children.<br =
/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />As economic =
determinists of the closeted neo-Marxist sort, these same voices also claim=
to be in the vanguard of history.&nbsp; They believe that the material for=
ces of post-industrial society require this evolution of a new form of livi=
ng: a post-family model which reconciles the atomistic individual with the =
total state.&nbsp; In pursuing this ideology, they have willingly and openl=
y sacrificed the natural order, building an unnatural world in its place...=
<br />&nbsp;<br />I believe that this can be done by focusing on the phrase=
, "the natural family."&nbsp; Words convey ideas...and ideals.&nbsp; And we=
are now engaged in a battle over the meaning of key words.&nbsp; In May 19=
98, a Working Group of the World Congress of Families - including Australia=
's Peter Westmore - met in a Second Century B.C. room in the ancient city o=
f Rome, to craft a definition of this term: <br />&nbsp;<br />The natural f=
amily is the fundamental social unit, inscribed in human nature, and center=
ed around the voluntary union of a man and a woman in a lifelong covenant o=
f marriage for the purposes of satisfying the longings of the human heart t=
o give and receive love, welcoming and ensuring the full physical and emoti=
onal development of children, sharing a home that serves as the center for =
social, educational, economic, and spiritual life, building strong bonds am=
ong the generations to pass on a way of life that has transcendent meaning,=
and extending a hand of compassion to individuals and households whose cir=
cumstances fall short of these ideals.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&=
nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />&nbsp;<br />In expanding on this phrase=
, I want to highlight recognition of the natural family in five ways:&nbsp;=
as part of the created order; as imprinted on our natures; as the source o=
f bountiful joy; as the fountain of new life; and as the bulwark of liberty=
.<br />&nbsp;<br />First, <u><strong><font color=3D"#993366" size=3D"4">PAR=
T OF THE NATURAL CREATED ORDER</font></strong></u><br />&nbsp;<br />. . . W=
hat does science teach?&nbsp; The founders of modern anthropology also held=
that marriage is an unchanging institution, universal in its basic element=
s and common to all humanity.&nbsp; As Edward Westermarck explained a centu=
ry ago: "Among the lowest savages, as well as the most civilized races of m=
en, we find the family consisting of parents and children, and the father a=
s its protector."&nbsp; Marriage bound this family system together, uniting=
 'a regulated sexual relation' with 'economic obligations. [i]. . .<br />&n=
bsp;<br />Second, the natural family is <strong><u><font color=3D"#993333">=
IMPRINTED ON OUR NATURE AS HUMANS</font></u></strong><br />&nbsp;<br />Whil=
e the main current of Western philosophy and social science rushed toward M=
arxist forms of understanding in the late 19th and 20th centuries, a dissen=
ting school of sociology offered an alternate analysis, one focused on huma=
nkind's familial nature.&nbsp; The first of these dissenters was the French=
academic, Frederic Le Play, active in the 1870's and 1880's.[ii]<br />&nbs=
p;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Le Play argued tha=
t human behavior did not follow the theoretical schemes of his liberal and =
socialist contempories.&nbsp; Rather, he identified and sought to explain t=
he close relation between what he called 'la famille soudre'-or the stem fa=
mily-and historical examples of a stable, creative prosperity.&nbsp; This s=
tem family held the nuclear dyad of husband and wife at its core, yet also =
embraced extended kin.&nbsp; He argued that this family form, "by a remarka=
ble favor of Providence has within its very structure the beneficient quali=
ties of the individual and those of association."&nbsp; <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&=
nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Three great 20th Century so=
ciologists based their efforts on the legacy of Le Play:&nbsp; Carle Zimmer=
man; Pitirim Sorokin; and Robert Nisbet.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp=
;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Carle Zimmerman, Professor of Sociology at =
America's Harvard University, wrote <strong>Family and Civilization</strong=
> in 1947.&nbsp; It traced the course of family structures throughout the g=
lobe and across the millennia.&nbsp; In describing the prospects for family=
reconstruction, Zimmerman embraced Le Play's concept of the stem family, r=
e-labelling it the domestic family.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbs=
p;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Importantly, Zimmerman insisted that this domest=
ic family model could be found "among all people who combine the benefits o=
f agriculture, industry, and settled life with the commonsense idea of defe=
nding their private life from the domination of legislators, from the invas=
ion of bureaucrats, and from the exaggerations of the manufacturing regime.=
"<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />Sorokin=
was born and educated in Russia, but expelled by the Bolsheviks in 1921, S=
orokin shared with Zimmerman a common debt to Le Play, accepting his concep=
t of the stem family as the most stable, creative, and natural social form.=
&nbsp; In his book, <strong>The Crisis of Our Age</strong>, Sorokin emphasi=
zed the tie of mounting social turmoil to shrinking family size and the atr=
ophy of family functions, most notably education.&nbsp; The only feasible c=
ourse was to launch a new cultural order.&nbsp; As he put it:&nbsp; <br />A=
transformation of the forms of social relationship, by replacing the prese=
nt compulsory and contractual relationships with purer and more godly famil=
istic relationships, is the order of the day....Not only are they the noble=
st of all relationships, but under the circumstances there is no way out of=
the present triumph of barbarian force but through the realm of familistic=
 relationships.&nbsp; <br />&nbsp;<br />The third great sociologist in this=
tradition was Robert Nisbet, whom I counted as a friend and mentor.&nbsp; =
He is best known as the author of the books, <strong>The Quest for</strong>=
 <strong>Community</strong> and <strong>The Twilight of Authority</strong>.=
[iii]&nbsp; In the latter volume, published in 1975, Nisbet offered a passa=
ge of profound importance.&nbsp; "It should be obvious," he says, "that fam=
ily, not the individual, is the real molecule of society, the key link of t=
he social chain of being.&nbsp; It is inconceivable to me that either intel=
lectual growth or social order or the roots of liberty can possibly be main=
tained among a people unless the kinship tie is strong and has both functio=
nal significance and symbolic authority."[iv]<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;=
