The d= irector of the movie, Michael Joy said, "It's very exciting and it's really= nice to see the film have the response it's had from the audience. It is i= nteresting to note that Michael Joy was inspired to create the movie after = finding some level of healing and restoration at a men's group, run by Paul= Whyte of Sydney Men's Network. Paul is one of the pioneers of the men's movement in Australia = and is now sharing his methods with the world; he is also a dear friend. Ho= wever from Paul's point of view, men's group the movie broke all the rules = of how to run a men's group in the name of theatrical license. " Men's Group was the highest scoring Australian feature film as voted by t= he audience at the Sydney Film Festival 2008. Men's Group also scored highl= y at international film festivals in Copenhagen, Rotterdam, Warsaw and Melb= ourne and won the best digital film of the year at Digispaa Spaartan Awards= . Some of the comments made were: I laughed till I cried and then I cried my heart out. SM Rotterdam At last someone is breaking the taboo and telling the truth about what men = are feeling. MC NSW Revelatory and uplifting. By delving deep into the hearts of men. Michael J= oy, the director has crafted something quite transcendent. Simon de Bruyn I= F Magazine After watching Men's Group with my wife, I think I would agree with all of = the above statements. Men's Group is the story of six very different men. T= hey meet once a week at Paul's home, who is the facilitator, to talk. When = they first begin meeting they are complete strangers. They soon discover th= at they all have something in common, their maleness. As trust grows betwee= n them, they gradually begin to share and learn to listen to each other. Th= ey each find that they are not quite so alone in their fears as they had pr= esumed. It takes a tragedy for the men to finally understand that they must= become responsible for their own lives and those of their loved ones. The movie earns its MA+15 rating well - the language is pretty strong - min= d you nothing that you won't hear on the building site or down a mine. It i= s certainly very real. One reviewer uses the word 'torrid' to describe one = of the scenes - certainly it is not for the weak hearted. In discussing Men's Group with Professor John MacDonald, president of the M= en's Health Forum, we agreed that this movie is at times a tad depressing, = insomuch as each of the men's situations is of varying extremes. Thoreau's = words come to mind, 'The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.' Although I believe that most viewers will identify with or 'know' some of t= he characters, this movie is definitely a very gritty non-Hollywood offerin= g and could be the 'Napoleon Dynamite' for the men's movement. For me the most moving scene in Men's Group is where the men in the group s= tart to talk about their fathers. I have initiated the same topic with men = all over Australia and the response is always revealing. From tears, to smi= les of joy, to blank stares - the effect of fathers on their children is al= ways profound. Alex, the focal point for the story says of his dad, "There's no two ways a= bout it, my dad was a fair dinkum bullsh*t artist. But you know something? = I loved him, but I never told him that, and he never once said to me, 'Son = I love you'." The irony is that this statement could well be the subtext of Alex's life a= nd that thought is scary for us all. My own dad let go of a promising career in commercial real estate to be a s= tay at home dad to his two 'beautiful boys'. Unlike Alex's dad, he regularl= y told us he loved us. I doubt that you would be reading this newsletter if= he had not raised us so lovingly. I know of many men across Australia who are alive today because of the work= of the Fatherhood Foundation. They didn't take the path of Freddy in the f= ilm. I know of many marriages that are together today because of the work of the= Fatherhood Foundation. It depicts levels of fa= ilure, despair and hopelessness rarely experienced, or even imagined, by or= dinary people. It does this brutally, and brilliantly, and is successful be= cause it remains uncluttered by other ambitions. I change my mind about this film as often as I think about it. My first res= ponse was disappointment. There is no attempt to identify causes or propose= solutions. Afterwards I realised that it didn't need to and would be dimin= ished if it did. men's group is valuable because it unveils and displays ha= rd and uncomfortable truths in a confronting and unpleasant way. It leaves = a bitter aftertaste that can only be washed away with action that leads to = change. Its legacy for disenfranchised fathers may well be similar to that = of Dickens or Dostoyevsky in cultivating a mindset willing to accommodate s= ocial reform. men's group is not entertainment. There is nothing in the viewing experienc= e to be enjoyed. It is dark with the appalling suffering of men whose circu= mstances and own actions have sent them on a downward spiral into a meaning= less existence. It's honest and cruel in its portrait of a collection of me= n who have surrendered themselves to lives not worth living. They inhabit a= world of self-hatred, consumed by bitterness and regret, without purpose a= nd without hope. They are society's garbage, rejected and abandoned by wive= s, children and parents. Except for one man. This bloke knows how to love. He lives for the young da= ughter whose love for him is without judgement or conditions. However his l= ove becomes his agony when his daughter's mother denies him the opportunity= to express his fathers' heart. We were quite aware of the scho= ol's schedule this week, because we endured the stress-fest with our eldest= as she prepared for trimester-ending exams. At least we had the pleasure o= f attending conferences with teachers of the two younger Burglets. These academic status checks occurred the same week we marked the 11th anni= versary of our engagement. Something about this annual remembrance prompts = us to look back over the previous period and conduct our own review. Instead of a parent/teacher conference, it's a husband/wife conference: how= are we doing? What is going well, where are we merely meeting standards, a= nd what definitely needs improvement? There's a line between motivation and discouragement, between dreams and di= sappointment. It's a joint journey to discern lofty but still reasonable goals and put as= ide delusions over the highly-desired and ultimately impossible outcomes. Such an analytical approach to love kind of sucks all the romance out of it= , doesn't it? So abandon the objective measures and let's go completely sub= jective. It's been a good year. A family vacation last winter, a recent getaway for = just the two of us, and we now cherish the anticipation of attending next s= ummer's Smart Marriages conference together. It's also been a heck of a year. Huge percentages of our retirement equity = disappeared in the tanked market. We struggled with various family situatio= ns, especially the deployment of Audora's brother, Paul, to Iraq. Death has= come close, calling away a grandfather and an uncle. It tiptoed way too close last weekend, in an unexpected way, when we learne= d that Paul's roommate was killed in a helicopter accident. In this case, o= ur grief was probably an extension of Paul's grief, but mourning the pilot'= s death activates fear we've tried to keep buried since he was deployed thi= s summer. So are we on track? It depends on which factors get the focus, if it's moti= vation or discouragement at issue. Discouragement says that financially, we're upside down in the investment d= itch. Motivation, sometimes seasoned with a healthy dose of denial =AD of m= ortality, anyway - reframes our view that we're in it for the long-term. There's plenty of time for recovery, so keep plugging away and hold off on = freaking out, at least for now. Underwriting the 11 years of us-ness and our current views is the mindset t= hat we will have as long as we have, or are granted, to keep working on the= se things. There's no final exam or end of the marking period in this marri= age. And report cards? Cer= tain journalists have claimed that I am homophobic. You be the judge. Is being homophobic bringing a young man into your home with your young fam= ily who has the death sentence of aids? That same young man needed shelter= from the storm. A placed filled with unconditional love. He came from a br= oken home. He had a father wound. He had been sexually abused by other olde= r men. That same young man ended up working the wall in Sydney. This is not= a good place for any young man to have to work. He needed someone to tell = him that he was loved and appreciated not for the sex he could give to his = paying customers who abused him but because of who he was on the inside a w= onderful young man, with a future and a destiny. Is being homophobic giving an award at a public function in Parliament Hous= e, Canberra in August 2005 to a wonderful Lesbian women from Melbourne who = had the guts to set up an organization to help trafficked women caught in t= he exploitative web of male driven prostitution? Unfortunately some men sti= ll are bastards? Certainly not all but some. White Ribbon Day tells the sto= ries. Is being homophobic inviting a Mayor of a local council in Sydney to give a= wards to the men who have completed a fatherhood course? That mayor was a h= omosexual man but as a Lord Mayor he deserves our respect and honour. After= all we are all someone's daughter or someone's son and as such we all dese= rve that same honour and respect. If I am attacked it is because I believe that our children matter. If I am= attacked it is because I believe that we should give our children the very= best we can give them. Our children need live f= athers not dead fathers. Men are dying almost 5 years earlier than women. M= ost of this morbidity is preventable. Men's Health has been a much neglecte= d issue. The women of Australia were granted a National Women's Health Poli= cy in 1989. This National Men's Health Policy has been a long time coming. I applaud Nicola Roxon for her initiative in getting this policy off the gr= ound. She is a great women and mother and she is doing a great job. I congr= atulate the Rudd Labor Government for their courage to tackle the shocking = epidemic of male suicide and I am willing to continue as an advocate for Au= ssie men as an ambassador on their behalf as well as the government. It's difficult not to conclude that the term 'hate literature' was invented= by those in the academic community who wish to marginalise points of view = that diverge from their own. For the record, early this decade the Austral= ian Drug Foundation undertook research into drug use in the gay community i= n response to concerns expressed by that community. The research - which was not made public due to the sensitive nature of the= issue - found that drug use in the gay community was 4 to 10 times higher = than in the broader community.  I had heard a lot about the Australian movie men's group www.mensgroupthemovie.com  so I= was keen to see it.
 
men's group (MA+15) = won Best Australian Feature Film of the year at the IF Awards as well as wi= nning Best Script and Best Actor (Grant Dodwell). The director of the movie= , Michael Joy said, "It's very exciting and it's really nice to see the fil= m have the response it's had from the audience. It = is interesting to note that Michael Joy was inspired to create the movie af= ter finding some level of healing and restoration at a men's group, run by = Paul Whyte of Sydney Men's Network<= /a>. Paul is one of the pioneers of the men's movement in Australia and is = now sharing his methods with the world; he is also a dear friend. However f= rom Paul's point of view, men's group the movie broke all the rules of how = to run a men's group in the name of theatrical license. =20
  
" Men's Group was the highest scoring Australian= feature film as voted by the audience at the Sydney Film Festival 2008. Me= n's Group also scored highly at international film festivals in Copenhagen,= Rotterdam, Warsaw and Melbourne and won the best digital film of the year = at Digispaa Spaartan Awards. Some of the comments made were:

After watching Men's Group with my wife, I think I would agree with = all of the above statements. Men's Group is the story of six very different= men. They meet once a week at Paul's home, who is the facilitator, to talk= . When they first begin meeting they are complete strangers. They soon disc= over that they all have something in common, their maleness. As trust grows= between them, they gradually begin to share and learn to listen to each ot= her. They each find that they are not quite so alone in their fears as they= had presumed. It takes a tragedy for the men to finally understand that th= ey must become responsible for their own lives and those of their loved one= s.
 
The movie earns its MA+15 rating well - the language is= pretty strong - mind you nothing that you won't hear on the building site = or down a mine. It is certainly very real. One reviewer uses the word 'torr= id' to describe one of the scenes - certainly it is not for the weak hearte= d.
 
In discussing Men's Group with Professor John MacDonald= , president of the Men's Health Forum, we agreed that this movie is at time= s a tad depressing, insomuch as each of the men's situations is of varying = extremes. Thoreau's words come to mind, 'The mass of men lead lives of quie= t desperation.'
 
Although I believe that most viewers will = identify with or 'know' some of the characters, this movie is definitely a = very gritty non-Hollywood offering and could be the 'Napoleon Dynamite' for= the men's movement.
 
For me the most moving scene in Men's= Group is where the men in the group start to talk about their fathers. I h= ave initiated the same topic with men all over Australia and the response i= s always revealing. From tears, to smiles of joy, to blank stares - the eff= ect of fathers on their children is always profound.
 
Alex,= the focal point for the story says of his dad, "There's no two ways about = it, my dad was a fair dinkum bullsh*t artist. But you know something? I lov= ed him, but I never told him that, and he never once said to me, 'Son I lov= e you'."
 
The irony is that this statement could well be t= he subtext of Alex's life and that thought is scary for us all.
 =
My own dad let go of a promising career in commercial real estate to = be a stay at home dad to his two 'beautiful boys'. Unlike Alex's dad, he re= gularly told us he loved us. I doubt that you would be reading this newslet= ter if he had not raised us so lovingly.
 
I know of many me= n across Australia who are alive today because of the work of the Fatherhoo= d Foundation. They didn't take the path of Freddy in the film.
 =
I know of many marriages that are together today because of the work = of the Fatherhood Foundation.
 
It all goes back to the eff= ect of a loving father who did say, 'I love you' and stayed home to prove i= t.

We will eventually get to our promised newsle= tter title 'Love in Action'. Then again, maybe we've already arrived. Make = sure you tell your kids you love them. Not again Warwick? Yes!!

PS This week has been quite 'interesting' to= say the least. I was appointed as an Ambassador for the Draft National Men's Health Policy on Tues= day. In just over 24 hours, due to pressure from homosexual and militant fe= minist lobby groups because of our publication 21 Reasons Why Gende= r Matters, I was given the axe by the Health Minister. The l= ies and treachery by our militant feminist friends that I was a 'hate m= ongering homophobic bigot' were believed and promoted by the media. Never l= et the truth get in the way of a good story applies very well. You will fin= d my rebuttal called 'Open Letter to My Friends' as Special Feature this we= ek.
 
I stand by my convictions and will not back down. Chil= dren need a mother and a father. Promoting anything less than this through = politically correct government policy will cause great pain for our childre= n as they struggle to find themselves in a world that seems upside down.  
Your letters of support to media and parliamentarians, incl= uding the Prime Minister, would be greatly appreciated.

REVIEW - 'men's group' the movie3D"Mens

men's group is a radical new genre = in film-making that will not deliver on your expectations, whatever they mi= ght be.
 
men's group is a powerful film ab= out powerless men. It depicts levels of failure, despair and hopelessness r= arely experienced, or even imagined, by ordinary people. It does this bruta= lly, and brilliantly, and is successful because it remains uncluttered by o= ther ambitions.
 
I change my mind about this film as often= as I think about it. My first response was disappointment. There is no att= empt to identify causes or propose solutions. Afterwards I realised that it= didn't need to and would be diminished if it did. men's group is valuable = because it unveils and displays hard and uncomfortable truths in a confront= ing and unpleasant way. It leaves a bitter aftertaste that can only be wash= ed away with action that leads to change. Its legacy for disenfranchised fa= thers may well be similar to that of Dickens or Dostoyevsky in cultivating = a mindset willing to accommodate social reform.
 
m= en's group is not entertainment. There is nothing in the viewing e= xperience to be enjoyed. It is dark with the appalling suffering of men who= se circumstances and own actions have sent them on a downward spiral into a= meaningless existence. It's honest and cruel in its portrait of a collecti= on of men who have surrendered themselves to lives not worth living. They i= nhabit a world of self-hatred, consumed by bitterness and regret, without p= urpose and without hope. They are society's garbage, rejected and abandoned= by wives, children and parents.
 
Except for one man. This = bloke knows how to love. He lives for the young daughter whose love for him= is without judgement or conditions. However his love becomes his agony whe= n his daughter's mother denies him the opportunity to express his fathers' = heart. He ends his pain in the only way available to him.
 
= men's group begins with light layers of character developm= ent. At first the men meet reluctantly. They are strangers with little inte= rest in each other. They are there not to give help, but to receive it. Thi= ngs change. Stories are told. Opinions and emotions bubble to the surface. = They are vented explosively and without the usual constraints imposed by so= cial conventions. Self-absorption disappears as group cohesion builds.
 
Hope finally puts in an appearance in the last scene, but with= out sufficient justification to make it convincing. The hope is a lie.
 
men's group is not a film that will leave you= unaffected. It is not for the faint-hearted or vulnerable, or the bruised.= If you're unhappy, or grieving the loss of children, don't watch it. If yo= u're in recovery and are determined to be part of the solution, then men's group is essential viewing.

A status check for your marriage a good thing

School da= ys, final exams, and report cards. We were quite aware of the school's sche= dule this week, because we endured the stress-fest with our eldest as she p= repared for trimester-ending exams. At least we had the pleasure of attendi= ng conferences with teachers of the two younger Burglets.
 
= These academic status checks occurred the same week we marked the 11th anni= versary of our engagement. Something about this annual remembrance prompts = us to look back over the previous period and conduct our own review.
&= nbsp;
Instead of a parent/teacher conference, it's a husband/wife conf= erence: how are we doing? What is going well, where are we merely meeting s= tandards, and what definitely needs improvement?
 
There's a= line between motivation and discouragement, between dreams and disappointm= ent.
 
It's a joint journey to discern lofty but still reaso= nable goals and put aside delusions over the highly-desired and ultimately = impossible outcomes.
 
Such an analytical approach to love k= ind of sucks all the romance out of it, doesn't it? So abandon the objectiv= e measures and let's go completely subjective.
 
It's been a= good year. A family vacation last winter, a recent getaway for just the tw= o of us, and we now cherish the anticipation of attending next summer's Sma= rt Marriages conference together.
 
It's also been a heck of= a year. Huge percentages of our retirement equity disappeared in the tanke= d market. We struggled with various family situations, especially the deplo= yment of Audora's brother, Paul, to Iraq. Death has come close, calling awa= y a grandfather and an uncle.
 
It tiptoed way too close las= t weekend, in an unexpected way, when we learned that Paul's roommate was k= illed in a helicopter accident. In this case, our grief was probably an ext= ension of Paul's grief, but mourning the pilot's death activates fear we've= tried to keep buried since he was deployed this summer.
 
S= o are we on track? It depends on which factors get the focus, if it's motiv= ation or discouragement at issue.
 
Discouragement says that= financially, we're upside down in the investment ditch. Motivation, someti= mes seasoned with a healthy dose of denial ­ of mortality, anyway - ref= rames our view that we're in it for the long-term.
 
There's= plenty of time for recovery, so keep plugging away and hold off on freakin= g out, at least for now.
 
Underwriting the 11 years of us-n= ess and our current views is the mindset that we will have as long as we ha= ve, or are granted, to keep working on these things. There's no final exam = or end of the marking period in this marriage.
 
And report = cards? Not sure how to 'grade' this greedy thought, but even if many years = mark the rest of our lives together, it won't be long enough.

Open Letter to My Friends re Men's Health Amb= assador Appointment 

It is a wonderful thing when people vilify you and tell lies about = you. Certain journalists have claimed that I am homophobic. You be the judg= e.
 
Is being homophobic bringing a young man into your hom= e with your young family who has the death sentence of aids?  That sam= e young man needed shelter from the storm. A placed filled with uncondition= al love. He came from a broken home. He had a father wound. He had been sex= ually abused by other older men. That same young man ended up working the w= all in Sydney. This is not a good place for any young man to have to work. = He needed someone to tell him that he was loved and appreciated not for the= sex he could give to his paying customers who abused him but because of wh= o he was on the inside a wonderful young man, with a future and a destiny. =
 
Is being homophobic giving an award at a public function = in Parliament House, Canberra in August 2005 to a wonderful Lesbian women f= rom Melbourne who had the guts to set up an organization to help trafficked= women caught in the exploitative web of male driven prostitution? Unfortun= ately some men still are bastards? Certainly not all but some. White Ribbon= Day tells the stories.
 
Is being homophobic inviting a Ma= yor of a local council in Sydney to give awards to the men who have complet= ed a fatherhood course? That mayor was a homosexual man but as a Lord Mayor= he deserves our respect and honour. After all we are all someone's daughte= r or someone's son and as such we all deserve that same honour and respect.=
 
If I am attacked it is because I believe that our childr= en matter.  If I am attacked it is because I believe that we should gi= ve our children the very best we can give them. If I am attacked it is beca= use I believe every child has the right to a mother and a father. Children = need a mother and a father not two mummies or two daddies. So= me contributed a lot and some a little. Ten are doctors while many are prac= titioners and counsellors. '21 Reasons Why Gender Matters' shows from thousands of= studies the world over, that the natural way is the best way and when we b= reak that natural order the statistics show things just start to go wrong. = People get hurt. Children are abused. Father wounds are created. Families b= reak up. Relationships break down. Maybe we should rename the 'Father Wound= ' the 'Gender Wound'? The pain of the Gender Wound is a non-discriminatory = pain. This pain is felt by heterosexuals and homosexuals. The story of this= pain is well told in the ground breaking Australian movie called the Men's= Group.
 
21 Reasons Why Gender Matter was released some tim= e ago in terms of the news cycle. This document is old news.  Every Me= mber of Parliament received a copy in the lead up to the last election. So = did the media in the press gallery. Why all the fuss now?
 
=  I don't know where this story came from? I have not said anything abo= ut this subject for quite some time. This sort of hetrophobia baffles me. <= br /> 
 A lady from the USA in the lead up to international = Mens Day www.internationalmensday.com=   on the 19th November called me a 'father's rights advocate= '. I would prefer to be called a 'love advocate' or a 'new way to be human = advocate'.  My main focus is healing the father wound in the children = of Australia and trying to turn the tide of fatherlessness in our nation. S= uicide is directly related to Fatherlessness. Our children need live father= s not dead fathers. Men are dying almost 5 years earlier than women. Most o= f this morbidity is preventable. Men's Health has been a much neglected iss= ue. The women of Australia were granted a National Women's Health Policy in= 1989. This National Men's Health Policy has been a long time coming.

I applaud Nicola Roxon for her initiative in getting this polic= y off the ground. She is a great women and mother and she is doing a great = job. I congratulate the Rudd Labor Government for their courage to tackle t= he shocking epidemic of male suicide and I am willing to continue as an adv= ocate for Aussie men as an ambassador on their behalf as well as the govern= ment. We desperately need a national discourse on a National Men's Health P= olicy. I am honoured to work alongside such great Aussie men as Professor J= ohn MacDonald, Barry Williams, Tim Mathieson and others. All have a story t= o tell. They need to be heard. It is sad that these vicious unprovoked pers= onal attacks are obfuscating the real message of Men's Health and the many = slurs that men still have to endure because of their sex.
 
I have received many encouraging phone calls and emails in the light of th= ese unprovoked attacks upon my character and I want to thank those Australi= an men and women for their support and encouragement.

When Jack Burt confessed that he'd been banned for five days for hitti= ng the bus driver in the head with an apple core, dad Sam thought he should= learn the hard way. He and Jack last week were getting up at 5.10am for th= e dusty 13km-hike from the Darwin rural area of Herbert, all the way to Hum= pty Doo.

Mr Burt also took the wheels off Jack's bike so he cou= ldn't be tempted to ride to school
 

THERE are calls for Northern Territory man Sam Burt to be made f= ather of the year in support of his old-fashioned punishment for his five-y= ear-old son.

Why is it that every time a criticism= is made of the gay lifestyle, gay groups and academics play the victim car= d? 
It's difficult not to conclude that the term 'hate literatur= e' was invented by those in the academic community who wish to marginalise = points of view that diverge from their own.  For the record, early thi= s decade the Australian Drug Foundation undertook research into drug use in= the gay community in response to concerns expressed by that community.&nbs= p;
The research - which was not made public due to the sensitive natu= re of the issue - found that drug use in the gay community was 4 to 10 time= s higher than in the broader community. This is an important finding that n= eeds to be heard in the discussion about the most appropriate parenting arr= angements for the raising of children.

I've read all the stuff and it is a crock.  = Fairly mean and hurtful but a crock none the less. 
 
= I know you, I know where you are coming from and what you believe in terms = of what is best for Australian kids - so I recognise that your intentions a= re being twisted and fired back at you.  For me very little hurts more= than being misunderstood; it might be similar for you.  I am feeling = for you mate.
 
Anyway mate, I still believe in you and your= integrity.  I acknowledge your strength of character in refusing to b= ack down from 'best practice'.

My guess i= s it is a spill over for the Tim Mathieson thing with someone just looking = for a chink in Labor's armour to have a shot at them.  I reckon you ha= ve been the victim of some petty politics my friend.  Stinks I know.
