The newspaper headline boldly proclaimed 'Jesus answers Roos Prayers'. The =
headline referred, not to Jesus Christ, but to Joshua Kennedy, the man who =
had saved Australia's skin when playing soccer against Uzbekistan in last W=
ednesday's World Cup Qualifier at the Telstra Stadium, Sydney.
I had the joy of attending the match, along with my 26 year old son Jonatha=
n. We also took two lads, 14 and 16 years old, with us who are keen soccer =
fans. One of the boys lives with his mum and sister. Mum and Dad's troubles=
got a bit too much a number of years ago. Dad has the tendency to over dri=
nk so this boy has faced a fair degree of fatherlessness.[http://origin.ih.=

Every young man growing up has a deep hunger for masculine role models. Whe=
ther spoken or unspoken, the need for authentic masculine role modelling is=
still there. The lack of such role models, in the form of fatherlessness, =
is destroying our society more than any other single thing.

Dr Stephen Baskerville writes In the Politics of Fatherhood<http://rs6.net/=
tn.jsp?et=3D1102530739746&s=3D1211&e=3D001lOR7jkxsHofHE9-4U4282NIGpWOoxAKLP=

9hUfSV3Evat4DxR1_FoQOipyHKVJvjkh4ZlXywBpnV2xS31einzs>:

'Virtually every major social pathology has been linked to fatherlessness: =
violent crime, drug and alcohol abuse, truancy, teen pregnancy and suicide =
all correlate more strongly to fatherlessness than to any other single fact=
or. The majority of prisoners, juvenile detention inmates, high school drop=
outs, pregnant teenagers, adolescent murderers, and rapists all come from f=
atherless homes. The connection is so strong that controlling for fatherles=
sness erases the relationships between race and crime and between low incom=
e and crime.'

Who can we look to as the ultimate model for young boys and the men of toda=
y? The fans at the soccer on Wednesday night called out "Jesus our saviour"=
when Joshua Kennedy deftly 'headed' in the goal that initiated the win. Le=
t's hear it for the Socceroos! Maybe those fans had the right name but the=
wrong person. Josh Kennedy looks a lot like Jesus with his beard and long =
hair. He might help Australian win the World Cup but he can't help win the =
world and provide the ultimate standard of conduct for the modern man. We m=
ust look more closely at the real Jesus.

In 1926 Dr James Allan Francis summed up Josh Kennedy's namesake most eloqu=
ently.

'Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant w=
oman. He grew up in another obscure village, where he worked in a carpenter=
's shop until he was thirty. Then for three years he was an itinerant preac=
her.

He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or ow=
ned a home. He never set foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hund=
red miles from the place he was born. He did none of the things that usuall=
y accompany greatness.

While He was still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against =
him. His friends deserted him. He was turned over to his enemies, and went =
through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieve=
s. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for the only piece of prope=
rty he had - his coat.

When he was dead, he was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave.

Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure f=
or much of the human race. All the armies that ever marched, and all the na=
vies that ever sailed, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the k=
ings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of people =
on this earth as powerfully as this "One Solitary Life."[http://origin.ih.c=
onstantcontact.com/fs007/1101938345415/img/690.jpg?a=3D1102530739746]'

Jesus Christ, as the greatest lesson in manhood that ever walked the face o=
f this earth, is hard to beat. Even Josh Kennedy would struggle.

Tell the story of Jesus to your children. You could do this be reading the =
Special Feature in the newsletter an then let them ask questions. Celebrate=
Easter with your family by going to the church of your choice. Your childr=
en will be richer for the experience.

A man owned a small farm near Bourke. The Department Industrial Relations =
Wage & Hours Division claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help an=
d sent an agent out to interview him.
'I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,' demanded the a=
gent.
'Well,' replied the farmer, 'there's my farm hand who's been with me for 3 =
years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been=
here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board. =
Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day and does ab=
out 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his =
own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.=
He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.'

'That's the guy I want to talk to ... the half-wit,' says the agent.

'That would be me,' replied the farmer.

[http://img.constantcontact.com/ui/images1/s.gif] Part one
by Glenn

I became a daddy in May of 1988. We were age 17 and 15 when my daughter was=
born. Four months later we were married. By then I had turned 18, and she =
was 16.
My son was born 16 months later and 16 months after that, another son! My g=
od, I was 20 with three kids and only one was kinda planned! My third son w=
ho was born three years and four months later. My god, I was still only 23,=
had four kids, and our marriage was on the rocks!
My second child was planned. After that it just cascaded into a broken cond=
om, and then Norplant, which only worked for a couple of years. (We never m=
ade the hospital for my last son's birth, but that is another story.) It wa=
s 14 months after the birth of my last son that the big split up occurred a=
nd of course I became the homeless one. It was one month after my 25th birt=
hday, and weeks before our seventh anniversary. I knew the marriage was ove=
r but I could hardly bear to be away from the kids.
I lived in a tent for a few weeks until I found a 15 foot camper to live in=
. I was ordered to pay child support and was able to see the kids sometimes=
. I dealt with this for about two months until my ex-wife had another man m=
ove in with her. This was too much and I almost lost it. At this point my f=
amily gave me the support I needed and I came to Virginia to visit them for=
Thanksgiving. Within two days I was offered a job and decided to stay so I=
wouldn't do anything stupid and end up in jail.
It was very hard to be so far away, but it was also good for my personal he=
alth. Now I was able to pay my support (working 60 to 70 hours a week) and =
she could not stop me from seeing the kids. I would travel (sometimes 14 ho=
urs on a Greyhound bus) to see them, but they never had a phone so I would =
only hear from them if my support was late.
Eventually things got easier, I found a girlfriend, but that didn't keep me=
from feeling responsible for my kids. I vowed to be a daddy and not just a=
biological father, as a lot of men are. My ex-wife remarried before I even=
received my divorce papers, but by now it was just the kids I was after.
Even though I heard the stories of the drugs and parties going on at their =
house there was no evidence (other than my children's grades) and I lived 4=
00 miles away so there was nothing I could do. I just waited, knowing that =
something would happen, until the day came when my ex and her new husband t=
old me they wanted to move to Virginia. I was so happy that I would be able=
to see my kids more often, and I knew this would be my key to having their=
love in person, not just in heart. They wanted to move here and stay at my=
house a few days until they found an apartment. I could not pass up the ch=
ance to be with my kids, so I agreed.
My four children, their stepfather, and my ex-wife moved into my two bedroo=
m trailer the beginning of March 1997. "You must be crazy!" is what I heard=
from everyone, but a true "daddy" would do anything for his kids. Mommy, d=
addy and stepfather living in the same house. I just told everybody, "A few=
days isn't bad, they will find an apartment soon." So I thought. Eventuall=
y they did, but left the kids behind. That is when it really gets interesti=
ng, so I am going to write that in the next instalment.
I have the kids and that is all I wanted. It has been almost two years sinc=
e they have seen their mother, though she calls once in a while. Thereafter=
comes my winning battle to receive sole custody, child support, and all th=
e other "daddy" things I have.
Anyone can be a father, but any true dad knows the difference between dads =
and fathers!
Thanks for listening, and I hope you will read further postings.

Buried into One Another

There is something about putting your mouth on another human mouth, entwini=
ng fingers, embracing, exchanging vows of love, and living day in and day o=
ut in the presence of another person, which is at once a denial and an affi=
rmation of death. There is something radically insurrectionist about it yet=
also something acquiescent. There is a sense of the two of you alone toget=
her on a windswept alien planet, clinging to one another for warmth; but th=
ere is also the sense of an invincible alliance, the bold formation of some=
thing that is ultimately stronger than anything the enemy can throw at you.

A man, on the eve of his wedding day, knows this perfectly well. He knows t=
hat something in his manhood is going down to a bitter and ignominious defe=
at. Nonetheless he is joyful and defiantly confident. Trembling in his boot=
s and wracked by doubts, still he is jubilant and certain. He goes forward =
like a man to the gas chamber, yet somehow the happiest fellow on earth. De=
ath doesn't matter when you're in love - and yet, neither has it ever been =
more to the point.

A wedding might even be thought of as the opposite of a funeral: instead of=
one person being buried in the earth, two people are buried into one anoth=
er. In any case death will continue to haunt a marriage, even though (or pr=
ecisely because) love is a conspiracy against it. And this is true, strange=
ly enough, whether the marriage is such a good one that any separation woul=
d be unthinkable, or whether in fact the marriage is so troubled that each =
partner longs secretly for the other's death.

Whatever the situation, death hovers over a marriage in a way even more ext=
raordinary than it does over an individual life, with almost double the pot=
ential impact. Death looms in front of marriage like a gigantic face appear=
ing in a window at night, and in a certain very primal way marriage may alm=
ost be understood as a charm against this apparition. This is nowhere more =
apparent than it is in the most natural yet overwhelming of drives that is =
present in all marriages - the drive to produce children. For to many peopl=
e a child, carefully nurtured and protected, is the human races only satisf=
actory means of hurling an insult at death and perhaps even getting the bet=
ter of it.

Yet if it is true that marriage intensifies the darkness of death's shadow,=
then surely having a child makes it darker still. The threat, the risk, th=
e potential for tragedy are all tripled when shared three ways. Death becom=
es a more fearsome foe in a family than it is in a single life, for an indi=
vidual dies once, while a family may be visited many times by death. And wh=
at is more devastating or incomprehensible than the death of a child? And i=
s not the loss of a loved child felt as a much greater tragedy than the dea=
th of an orphan? A family knows all of this instinctively, and that is why =
there is no individual, no unit, no other organisation on earth that is mor=
e protective of human life, and so more agonised by death, than is the fami=
ly.

All in all, it is impossible to say whether the ultimate effect of marriage=
or of children or of love itself is actually to hold death at bay outside =
the charmed, glowing circle of shared life, or rather to bring death overwh=
elmingly nearer. It is true that the very existence of death gives love an =
urgency, a poignancy, and even a clarity that might not otherwise be there.=
But surely the opposite is true as well: that life without love would rend=
er death less odious. The capacity to love, in fact, may be understood in p=
art as a God-given wisdom or clarity of vision which enables us to perceive=
more fully the horror of death and thereby to feel more acutely is sting.

For to loathe death is really to loathe its sting, which is sin; and sin, i=
n turn, is separation from God; so that when people fear and despise death =
(and this is true even of people who do not know God), what they really des=
pise - if only they could know it! - is the thought of separation from Him.

Then they all took Jesus to Pilate and began to bring up charges against h=
im. They said, "We found this man undermining our law and order, forbidding=
taxes to be paid to Caesar, setting himself up as Messiah-King." Pilate as=
ked him, "Is this true that you're 'King of the Jews'?"
"Those are your words, not mine," Jesus replied.
Pilate told the high priests and the accompanying crowd, "I find nothing wr=
ong here. He seems harmless enough to me."
But they were vehement. "He's stirring up unrest among the people with his =
teaching, disturbing the peace everywhere, starting in Galilee and now all =
through Judea. He's a dangerous man, endangering the peace."
When Pilate heard that, he asked, "So, he's a Galilean?" Realizing that he =
properly came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed the buck to Herod, who =
just happened to be in Jerusalem for a few days.
Herod was delighted when Jesus showed up. He had wanted for a long time to =
see him, he'd heard so much about him. He hoped to see him do something spe=
ctacular. He peppered him with questions. Jesus didn't answer - not one wor=
d. But the high priests and religion scholars were right there, saying thei=
r piece, strident and shrill in their accusations.
Mightily offended, Herod turned on Jesus. His soldiers joined in, taunting =
and jeering. Then they dressed him up in an elaborate king costume and sent=
him back to Pilate. That day Herod and Pilate became thick as thieves. Alw=
ays before they had kept their distance.
Then Pilate called in the high priests, rulers, and the others and said, "Y=
ou brought this man to me as a disturber of the peace. I examined him in fr=
ont of all of you and found there was nothing to your charge. And neither d=
id Herod, for he has sent him back here with a clean bill of health. It's c=
lear that he's done nothing wrong, let alone anything deserving death. I'm =
going to warn him to watch his step and let him go."
At that, the crowd went wild: "Kill him! Give us Barabbas!" (Barabbas had b=
een thrown in prison for starting a riot in the city and for murder.) Pilat=
e still wanted to let Jesus go, and so spoke out again.
But they kept shouting back, "Crucify! Crucify him!"
He tried a third time. "But for what crime? I've found nothing in him deser=
ving death. I'm going to warn him to watch his step and let him go."
But they kept at it, a shouting mob, demanding that he be crucified. And fi=
nally they shouted him down. Pilate caved in and gave them what they wanted=
. He released the man thrown in prison for rioting and murder, and gave the=
m Jesus to do whatever they wanted.
As they led him off, they made Simon, a man from Cyrene who happened to be =
coming in from the countryside, carry the cross behind Jesus. A huge crowd =
of people followed, along with women weeping and carrying on. At one point =
Jesus turned to the women and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't cry for =
me. Cry for yourselves and for your children. The time is coming when they'=
ll say, 'Lucky the women who never conceived! Lucky the wombs that never ga=
ve birth! Lucky the breasts that never gave milk!' Then they'll start calli=
ng to the mountains, 'Fall down on us!' calling to the hills, 'Cover us up!=
' If people do these things to a live, green tree, can you imagine what the=
y'll do with deadwood?"
Two others, both criminals, were taken along with him for execution.
When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along wit=
h the criminals, one on his right, the other on his left.
Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them; they don't know what they're doing."
Dividing up his clothes, they threw dice for them. The people stood there s=
taring at Jesus, and the ringleaders made faces, taunting, "He saved others=
. Let's see him save himself! The Messiah of God - ha! The Chosen - ha!"
The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him, making a game of it. They t=
oasted him with sour wine: "So you're King of the Jews! Save yourself!"
Printed over him was a sign: this is the King of the jews.
One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him: "Some Messiah you are! S=
ave yourself! Save us!"
But the other one made him shut up: "Have you no fear of God? You're gettin=
g the same as him. We deserve this, but not him - he did nothing to deserve=
 this."
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom."
He said, "Don't worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise."
By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark, the darkness lasting three=
hours - a total blackout. The Temple curtain split right down the middle. =
Jesus called loudly, "Father, I place my life in your hands!" Then he breat=
hed his last.
When the captain there saw what happened, he honored God: "This man was inn=
ocent! A good man, and innocent!"
All who had come around as spectators to watch the show, when they saw what=
actually happened, were overcome with grief and headed home. Those who kne=
w Jesus well, along with the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood=
at a respectful distance and kept vigil.
There was a man by the name of Joseph, a member of the Jewish High Council,=
a man of good heart and good character. He had not gone along with the pla=
ns and actions of the council. His hometown was the Jewish village of Arima=
thea. He lived in alert expectation of the kingdom of God. He went to Pilat=
e and asked for the body of Jesus. Taking him down, he wrapped him in a lin=
en shroud and placed him in a tomb chiseled into the rock, a tomb never yet=
used. It was the day before Sabbath, the Sabbath just about to begin.
The women who had been companions of Jesus from Galilee followed along. The=
y saw the tomb where Jesus' body was placed. Then they went back to prepare=
burial spices and perfumes. They rested quietly on the Sabbath, as command=
ed.
At the crack of dawn on Sunday, the women came to the tomb carrying the bur=
ial spices they had prepared. They found the entrance stone rolled back fro=
m the tomb, so they walked in. But once inside, they couldn't find the body=
 of the Master, Jesus.
They were puzzled, wondering what to make of this. Then, out of nowhere it =
seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awe=
struck and bowed down in worship. The men said, "Why are you looking for th=
e Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, but raised up. Remember how he =
told you when you were still back in Galilee that he had to be handed over =
to sinners, be killed on a cross, and in three days rise up?" Then they rem=
embered Jesus' words.
They left the tomb and broke the news of all this to the Eleven and the re=
st.

Letters

Dear Fatherhood Foundation

Hope all is well with home and work - I find your newsletter is still a goo=
d attempt to address issues often forgotten or hidden - you are doing a goo=
d job.

Sounds like a shame that DIDs will be shut down without a viable alternativ=
e. I don't know if anything can be done but as always I am happy to help.

Personally I am totally sick of seeing more advertisements all the time whi=
ch are used by violent women to justify their abuse of their passive gentle=
male partners. I have actually heard this excuse as the following words "=
Women are allowed to hit men that's why the ads on TV say that Australia sa=
ys no to violence against women." These people are simple folk often wi=
th severe brain damage from alcohol - the message needs to be simpler "Aust=
ralia says no to violence!" Why are these ads always allowed to be sexist?=
Surely they breach sexual discrimination laws? Anyone who has held and shi=
elded a baby while being beaten by their female partner and/or been bashed =
in front of their children knows that women are violent and feel totally ju=
stified in their violence. Violence by women against men is hidden and prob=
ably more common than the reverse - maybe its just me and the people I have=
known or maybe there is an epidemic of violent women in Australia? Who kno=
ws - everyone is too ashamed to admit they are a beaten husband/male partne=
r.

The entire mess is typical of our society and I cant fathom why our Governm=
ent continues to facilitate and financially support the destruction of fami=
ly units. Personally I believe its time to get rid of welfare and all the =
silly family tax benefits etc - it is creating a false illusion that indepe=
ndence can be achieved through dependence on Government handouts. This of c=
ourse creates the cycle of welfare dependency that is destroying our great =
nation. Why do people think that the world owes them money for nothing?

So as I see it - the government will fund advertising to directly support t=
he confused minds of violent women, will fund any women's group no matter h=
ow destructive or negative or deranged, will fund destruction of family uni=
ts and separation of children from half of their world without a question b=
eing raised ....

BUT won't fund DIDs.

Something is very wrong with this picture and it makes me very sad to see w=
hat has happened to my Australia.

SHAME Australia SHAME.

Thanks - keep up the great work.

Dear God

AS a father I want to leave something for my children to live for.
Truth transcends the generations.
Help me comprehend the power of truth in the human heart.
Help me experience the truth in the human heart
Clarence is right, "Easter says you can put truth in the grave but it won't=
 stay there.
You said, "I am the way the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father =
but through me".
To be a man is to live the truth.
To live the truth, we must find the truth.
Winston Churchill said "Men often stumble on the Truth,
but usually dust themselves off and hurry away..."
Help me not to hurry away from the truth,
no matter how revealing or how painful,
but help me embrace the truth
even if it costs me everything I am,
even if it costs me my life.
"You can put the truth in the grave but it won't stay there."

<div>The newspaper headline boldly proclaimed '<strong>Jesus answers Roos P=

Kennedy, the man who had saved Australia's skin when playing soccer agains=
t Uzbekistan in last Wednesday's World Cup Qualifier at the Telstra Stadium=
, Sydney.<br />I had the joy of attending the match, along with my 26 year =
old son Jonathan. We also took two lads, 14 and 16 years old, with us who a=
re keen soccer fans. One of the boys lives with his mum and sister. Mum and=
Dad's troubles got a bit too much a number of years ago. Dad has the tende=

">In the Politics of Fatherhood</a>:<br /><br /><em>'Virtually every major =
social pathology has been linked to fatherlessness: violent crime, drug and=
alcohol abuse, truancy, teen pregnancy and suicide all correlate more stro=
ngly to fatherlessness than to any other single factor. The majority of pri=

nnection is so strong that controlling for fatherlessness erases the relati=
onships between race and crime and between low income and crime.'<br />&nbs=
p;<br /></em>Who can we look to as the ultimate model for young boys and th=
e men of today? The fans at the soccer on Wednesday night called out "Jesus=
our saviour" when Joshua Kennedy deftly 'headed' in the goal that initiate=

y of 1988. We were age 17 and 15 when my daughter was born. Four months lat=
er we were married. By then I had turned 18, and she was 16. <br />My son w=
as born 16 months later and 16 months after that, another son! My god, I wa=
s 20 with three kids and only one was kinda planned! My third son who was b=
orn three years and four months later. My god, I was still only 23, had fou=
r kids, and our marriage was on the rocks! <br />My second child was planne=
d. After that it just cascaded into a broken condom, and then Norplant, whi=
ch only worked for a couple of years. (We never made the hospital for my la=
st son's birth, but that is another story.) It was 14 months after the birt=
h of my last son that the big split up occurred and of course I became the =
homeless one. It was one month after my 25th birthday, and weeks before our=
seventh anniversary. I knew the marriage was over but I could hardly bear =
to be away from the kids. <br />I lived in a tent for a few weeks until I f=
ound a 15 foot camper to live in. I was ordered to pay child support and wa=
s able to see the kids sometimes. I dealt with this for about two months un=
til my ex-wife had another man move in with her. This was too much and I al=
most lost it. At this point my family gave me the support I needed and I ca=
me to Virginia to visit them for Thanksgiving. Within two days I was offere=
d a job and decided to stay so I wouldn't do anything stupid and end up in =
jail. <br />It was very hard to be so far away, but it was also good for my=
personal health. Now I was able to pay my support (working 60 to 70 hours =
a week) and she could not stop me from seeing the kids. I would travel (som=
etimes 14 hours on a Greyhound bus) to see them, but they never had a phone=
so I would only hear from them if my support was late. <br />Eventually th=
ings got easier, I found a girlfriend, but that didn't keep me from feeling=
responsible for my kids. I vowed to be a daddy and not just a biological f=
ather, as a lot of men are. My ex-wife remarried before I even received my =
divorce papers, but by now it was just the kids I was after. <br />Even tho=
ugh I heard the stories of the drugs and parties going on at their house th=
ere was no evidence (other than my children's grades) and I lived 400 miles=
away so there was nothing I could do. I just waited, knowing that somethin=
g would happen, until the day came when my ex and her new husband told me t=
hey wanted to move to Virginia. I was so happy that I would be able to see =
my kids more often, and I knew this would be my key to having their love in=
person, not just in heart. They wanted to move here and stay at my house a=
few days until they found an apartment. I could not pass up the chance to =
be with my kids, so I agreed. <br />My four children, their stepfather, and=
my ex-wife moved into my two bedroom trailer the beginning of March 1997. =
"You must be crazy!" is what I heard from everyone, but a true "daddy" woul=
d do anything for his kids. Mommy, daddy and stepfather living in the same =
house. I just told everybody, "A few days isn't bad, they will find an apar=
tment soon." So I thought. Eventually they did, but left the kids behind. T=
hat is when it really gets interesting, so I am going to write that in the =
next instalment. <br />I have the kids and that is all I wanted. It has bee=
n almost two years since they have seen their mother, though she calls once=
in a while. Thereafter comes my winning battle to receive sole custody, ch=
ild support, and all the other "daddy" things I have. <br />Anyone can be a=
father, but any true dad knows the difference between dads and fathers! <b=
r />Thanks for listening, and I hope you will read further postings. <br />=
--Glenn, AKA Daddy! <br />God bless all the other daddies out there! <br />=

r /><strong><font size=3D"5">Buried into One Another</font></strong><br />&=
nbsp;<br />There is something about putting your mouth on another human mou=
th, entwining fingers, embracing, exchanging vows of love, and living day i=
n and day out in the presence of another person, which is at once a denial =
and an affirmation of death. There is something radically insurrectionist a=
bout it yet also something acquiescent. There is a sense of the two of you =
alone together on a windswept alien planet, clinging to one another for war=
mth; but there is also the sense of an invincible alliance, the bold format=
ion of something that is ultimately stronger than anything the enemy can th=
row at you. <br />&nbsp;<br />A man, on the eve of his wedding day, knows t=
his perfectly well. He knows that something in his manhood is going down to=
a bitter and ignominious defeat. Nonetheless he is joyful and defiantly co=
nfident. Trembling in his boots and wracked by doubts, still he is jubilant=
and certain. He goes forward like a man to the gas chamber, yet somehow th=
e happiest fellow on earth. Death doesn't matter when you're in love - and =
yet, neither has it ever been more to the point.<br />&nbsp;<br />A wedding=
might even be thought of as the opposite of a funeral: instead of one pers=
on being buried in the earth, two people are buried into one another. In an=
y case death will continue to haunt a marriage, even though (or precisely b=
ecause) love is a conspiracy against it. And this is true, strangely enough=
, whether the marriage is such a good one that any separation would be unth=
inkable, or whether in fact the marriage is so troubled that each partner l=
ongs secretly for the other's death.<br />&nbsp;<br />Whatever the situatio=
n, death hovers over a marriage in a way even more extraordinary than it do=
es over an individual life, with almost double the potential impact. Death =
looms in front of marriage like a gigantic face appearing in a window at ni=
ght, and in a certain very primal way marriage may almost be understood as =
a charm against this apparition. This is nowhere more apparent than it is i=
n the most natural yet overwhelming of drives that is present in all marria=
ges - the drive to produce children. For to many people a child, carefully =
nurtured and protected, is the human races only satisfactory means of hurli=
ng an insult at death and perhaps even getting the better of it.<br />&nbsp=
;<br />Yet if it is true that marriage intensifies the darkness of death's =
shadow, then surely having a child makes it darker still. The threat, the r=
isk, the potential for tragedy are all tripled when shared three ways. Deat=
h becomes a more fearsome foe in a family than it is in a single life, for =
an individual dies once, while a family may be visited many times by death.=
And what is more devastating or incomprehensible than the death of a child=
? And is not the loss of a loved child felt as a much greater tragedy than =
the death of an orphan? A family knows all of this instinctively, and that =
is why there is no individual, no unit, no other organisation on earth that=
is more protective of human life, and so more agonised by death, than is t=
he family.<br />&nbsp;<br />All in all, it is impossible to say whether the=
ultimate effect of marriage or of children or of love itself is actually t=
o hold death at bay outside the charmed, glowing circle of shared life, or =
rather to bring death overwhelmingly nearer. It is true that the very exist=
ence of death gives love an urgency, a poignancy, and even a clarity that m=
ight not otherwise be there. But surely the opposite is true as well: that =
life without love would render death less odious. The capacity to love, in =
fact, may be understood in part as a God-given wisdom or clarity of vision =
which enables us to perceive more fully the horror of death and thereby to =
feel more acutely is sting.<br />&nbsp;<br />For to loathe death is really =
to loathe its sting, which is sin; and sin, in turn, is separation from God=
; so that when people fear and despise death (and this is true even of peop=
le who do not know God), what they really despise - if only they could know=
it! - is the thought of separation from Him.</font></font></td></tr></tabl=

against him. They said, "We found this man undermining our law and order, =
forbidding taxes to be paid to Caesar, setting himself up as Messiah-King."=
Pilate asked him, "Is this true that you're 'King of the Jews'?" <br />"Th=
ose are your words, not mine," Jesus replied. <br />Pilate told the high pr=
iests and the accompanying crowd, "I find nothing wrong here. He seems harm=
less enough to me." <br />But they were vehement. "He's stirring up unrest =
among the people with his teaching, disturbing the peace everywhere, starti=
ng in Galilee and now all through Judea. He's a dangerous man, endangering =
the peace." <br />When Pilate heard that, he asked, "So, he's a Galilean?" =
Realizing that he properly came under Herod's jurisdiction, he passed the b=
uck to Herod, who just happened to be in Jerusalem for a few days. <br />He=
rod was delighted when Jesus showed up. He had wanted for a long time to se=
e him, he'd heard so much about him. He hoped to see him do something spect=
acular. He peppered him with questions. Jesus didn't answer - not one word.=
But the high priests and religion scholars were right there, saying their =
piece, strident and shrill in their accusations. <br />Mightily offended, H=
erod turned on Jesus. His soldiers joined in, taunting and jeering. Then th=
ey dressed him up in an elaborate king costume and sent him back to Pilate.=
That day Herod and Pilate became thick as thieves. Always before they had =
kept their distance. <br />Then Pilate called in the high priests, rulers, =
and the others and said, "You brought this man to me as a disturber of the =
peace. I examined him in front of all of you and found there was nothing to=
your charge. And neither did Herod, for he has sent him back here with a c=
lean bill of health. It's clear that he's done nothing wrong, let alone any=
thing deserving death. I'm going to warn him to watch his step and let him =
go." <br />At that, the crowd went wild: "Kill him! Give us Barabbas!" (Bar=
abbas had been thrown in prison for starting a riot in the city and for mur=
der.) Pilate still wanted to let Jesus go, and so spoke out again. <br />Bu=
t they kept shouting back, "Crucify! Crucify him!" <br />He tried a third t=
ime. "But for what crime? I've found nothing in him deserving death. I'm go=
ing to warn him to watch his step and let him go." <br />But they kept at i=
t, a shouting mob, demanding that he be crucified. And finally they shouted=
him down. Pilate caved in and gave them what they wanted. He released the =
man thrown in prison for rioting and murder, and gave them Jesus to do what=
ever they wanted. <br />As they led him off, they made Simon, a man from Cy=
rene who happened to be coming in from the countryside, carry the cross beh=
ind Jesus. A huge crowd of people followed, along with women weeping and ca=
rrying on. At one point Jesus turned to the women and said, "Daughters of J=
erusalem, don't cry for me. Cry for yourselves and for your children. The t=
ime is coming when they'll say, 'Lucky the women who never conceived! Lucky=
the wombs that never gave birth! Lucky the breasts that never gave milk!' =
Then they'll start calling to the mountains, 'Fall down on us!' calling to =
the hills, 'Cover us up!' If people do these things to a live, green tree, =
can you imagine what they'll do with deadwood?" <br />Two others, both crim=
inals, were taken along with him for execution. <br />When they got to the =
place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along with the criminals, one =
on his right, the other on his left. <br />Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive t=
hem; they don't know what they're doing." <br />Dividing up his clothes, th=
ey threw dice for them. The people stood there staring at Jesus, and the ri=
ngleaders made faces, taunting, "He saved others. Let's see him save himsel=
f! The Messiah of God - ha! The Chosen - ha!" <br />The soldiers also came =
up and poked fun at him, making a game of it. They toasted him with sour wi=
ne: "So you're King of the Jews! Save yourself!" <br />Printed over him was=
a sign: this is the King of the jews. <br />One of the criminals hanging a=
longside cursed him: "Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!" <br />=
But the other one made him shut up: "Have you no fear of God? You're gettin=
g the same as him. We deserve this, but not him - he did nothing to deserve=
this." <br />Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom=
." <br />He said, "Don't worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise.=
" <br />By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark, the darkness lasti=
ng three hours - a total blackout. The Temple curtain split right down the =
middle. Jesus called loudly, "Father, I place my life in your hands!" Then =
he breathed his last. <br />When the captain there saw what happened, he ho=
nored God: "This man was innocent! A good man, and innocent!" <br />All who=
had come around as spectators to watch the show, when they saw what actual=
ly happened, were overcome with grief and headed home. Those who knew Jesus=
well, along with the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a r=
espectful distance and kept vigil. <br />There was a man by the name of Jos=
eph, a member of the Jewish High Council, a man of good heart and good char=
acter. He had not gone along with the plans and actions of the council. His=
hometown was the Jewish village of Arimathea. He lived in alert expectatio=
n of the kingdom of God. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.=
Taking him down, he wrapped him in a linen shroud and placed him in a tomb=
chiseled into the rock, a tomb never yet used. It was the day before Sabba=
th, the Sabbath just about to begin. <br />The women who had been companion=
s of Jesus from Galilee followed along. They saw the tomb where Jesus' body=
was placed. Then they went back to prepare burial spices and perfumes. The=
y rested quietly on the Sabbath, as commanded. <br />At the crack of dawn o=
n Sunday, the women came to the tomb carrying the burial spices they had pr=
epared. They found the entrance stone rolled back from the tomb, so they wa=
lked in. But once inside, they couldn't find the body of the Master, Jesus.=
<br />They were puzzled, wondering what to make of this. Then, out of nowh=
ere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women w=
ere awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, "Why are you looking=
for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, but raised up. Remember =
how he told you when you were still back in Galilee that he had to be hande=
d over to sinners, be killed on a cross, and in three days rise up?" Then t=
hey remembered Jesus' words. <br />&nbsp;They left the tomb and broke the n=
ews of all this to the Eleven and the rest. <br />&nbsp;<br />Luke 23 & 24 =

/font><br /><strong>Letters</strong></font><br />&nbsp;<br />Dear Fatherhoo=
d Foundation<br />&nbsp;<br />Hope all is well with home and work - I find =
your newsletter is still a good attempt to address issues often forgotten o=
r hidden - you are doing a good job.<br /><br />Sounds like a shame that DI=
Ds will be shut down without a viable alternative.&nbsp; I don't know if an=
ything can be done but as always I am happy to help.<br /><br />Personally =
I am totally sick of seeing more advertisements all the time which are used=
by violent women to justify their abuse of their passive gentle male partn=
ers.&nbsp; I have actually heard this excuse as the following words "Women =
are allowed to hit men that's why the ads on TV say that Australia says no =
to violence against women."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; These people are simple=
folk often with severe brain damage from alcohol - the message needs to be=
simpler "Australia says no to violence!"&nbsp; Why are these ads always al=
lowed to be sexist? Surely they breach sexual discrimination laws? Anyone w=
ho has held and shielded a baby while being beaten by their female partner =
and/or been bashed in front of their children knows that women are violent =
and feel totally justified in their violence. Violence by women against men=
is hidden and probably more common than the reverse - maybe its just me an=
d the people I have known or maybe there is an epidemic of violent women in=
Australia? Who knows - everyone is too ashamed to admit they are a beaten =
husband/male partner.<br /><br />The entire mess is typical of our society =
and I cant fathom why our Government continues to facilitate and financiall=
y support the destruction of family units.&nbsp; Personally I believe its t=
ime to get rid of welfare and all the silly family tax benefits etc - it is=
creating a false illusion that independence can be achieved through depend=
ence on Government handouts. This of course creates the cycle of welfare de=
pendency that is destroying our great nation. Why do people think that the =
world owes them money for nothing?<br /><br />So as I see it - the governme=
nt will fund advertising to directly support the confused minds of violent =
women, will fund any women's group no matter how destructive or negative or=
deranged, will fund destruction of family units and separation of children=
from half of their world without a question being raised ....<br /><br />B=
UT won't fund DIDs. <br /><br />Something is very wrong with this picture a=
nd it makes me very sad to see what has happened to my Australia.&nbsp; <br=
 /><br />SHAME Australia SHAME.<br /><br />Thanks - keep up the great work.=
