We were once babies and w= e each had a mother. Having a baby is hard work. Looking after a baby once you have it is even h= arder. I have 5 children and my wife has worked very hard looking after the= m. I wish I could say the same about myself. Dirty nappies, sleepless night= s, never ending washing, not to mention the emotional wear and tear. Love i= s being committed to being committed but love always exacts a price. I have some good news for you. You have a chance to thank your mother next = week on Mother's Day - Sunday 10th May 2009. Millions of Australians will b= e waking up next Sunday to thank their mothers for being committed to being= committed to them. We at the Fatherhood Foundation salute the mothers of Australia and ask the= fathers of Australia to appreciate their own mum and join with us as we ro= ll out our Value Mothers 2009 campaign. The Fatherhood Foundation has already come under fire for running a campaig= n to support and honour mothers, (I suppose in much the same way as when ou= r first Father's Day ads were aired) but we take heart from the words of Ge= orge Orwell, "We have now sunk to a depth at which re-statement of the obvi= ous is now the duty of intelligent men." Last week we covered the topic: 'War Against Fatherhood'. Motherhood has al= so been demeaned quite heavily over the last few decades. Ann Crittenden, a= n economics reporter for the New York Times, became a mother later in life = and wrote a book about her experiences, 'The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World is Still the Least= Valued' =A9 2001. Ann's words are powerful: There's a certain lack of respect or regard for mothers' work as highly ski= lled, incredibly valuable labor. At the heart of it is a failure to underst= and that this is really the central work of the modern economy, which is ba= sed on highly skilled, creative, entrepreneurial people. Economists used to= consider land, labor, and capital to be the three main inputs into economi= c wealth. Now they are saying that two-thirds of national wealth is actuall= y created by 'human capital', which are the skills, abilities, and creative= entrepreneurship of people. If the child development research is true, then human development begins on= day one. And the most important person forming these skills and capabiliti= es is the person raising this child directly, most often the mother. We hav= e completely ignored this central role that mothers play. So it's not a str= etch to say that mothers are the most important producers in the economy. A= nd if so, we need to put much more respect and real value on the work. It's= the only job I know of where you have to pay to do it, you don't get paid = to do it. You pay a price economically to create an enormous amount of econ= omic values, and I think that's wrong. Dr Peter Cook, in 'Mothering Denied - How our culture harms women, infants and so= ciety' points out that where mothers are replaced by commercial daycare ope= rations, children suffer in a number of different ways. When fathers are taken out of the picture children also suffer. It is exact= ly the same with mothers. For this reason the Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundati= on is running a Value Mothers 2009 TV and media campaign. How do you know all this stuff?" "Uh," ...I was thinking quickly,"All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy." We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. "OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy" "Exactly" I replied back with a big smile on my face and joy in my heart. I'm a 38 year old single father; my daughter and I have been on our own for= 2 years now. Kelsey is four years old now, so she's been without her mum f= or over half her life. What scares me about the situation is that someday K= elsey is going to ask why her mum left her, why she wasn't good enough for = her to stay, and that's going to be a tough thing for a kid. I've seen some= psychologists about it, and if she needs help someday, I'll definitely get= help for her. Some of the struggles I've had raising a daughter have been difficult becau= se I want to be a mother and a father to her. My daughter didn't choose to = have a single dad, so I feel it's my responsibility to be a better parent t= han most kids are getting. At one point I was very involved with the P & F,= and I do a lot of volunteering to be involved. But some of the things that= are hard for me are things like doing her hair; these other girls come to = school and their hair is all pretty and has bows and is braided, but I can'= t do that; there's just a lot of things like that. Time issues are a strugg= le for me; I wake up at 5 each morning, make our lunches, we go to school a= nd work, and by the time I get home, make dinner, get her ready for bed, th= ere's no time for play, no fun time. It's either parent or work time; I wou= ldn't trade it for anything, but it's hard. I'd like to get some rest; it's= always busy, there are always things that need to be done. For my daughter, I know it's awkward for her because a lot of mums will com= e in to school to volunteer and have lunch. I drop her off at 7 a.m., and p= ick her up at 6 pm, 11 hrs a day on average; That's really tough; I feel re= ally guilty about that. She should be able to come home from school, have a= snack, watch TV, play with friends, and she doesn't have that opportunity,= and I don't know if she will ever get to do that. I don't plan on remarryi= ng until she is an adult or in college. I just don't want to break in a ste= p-mother situation. It's tough at school in May when they make mother's day= cards, or gifts for the mums at Christmas; typically most divorced parents= there's a mother and a father. She brought home a gift for her mum-what do= we do with it? Here we are in March and that gift is still sitting in a ba= g on the mantle of my fireplace, and I don't know what to do with it. She s= ays, "That's for my mum", and I want her to know she has a mum--but that's = the biggest struggle, that she doesn't have a mum in her life. When I decided to get help, I didn't have any choice, I had to get help. I = didn't know where to go, but a friend in the childcare industry helped lead= me on the path I needed to get help. I was extremely fortunate; I got a ho= ld of one of the social workers; she gave me a list of childcare providers = I could use, and I started calling and had that taken care of in 2-3 days. = . . Part One: Five lines of evidence for natural, 'best-fit' mothering Firstly, by considering the direct maternal pedigrees of each person alive = today, we can deduce some important facts about human beings and human natu= re, and the characteristics that must have been essential for the survival = of all our maternal ancestors, as they lived in tribes of hunter-gatherers,= and each baby girl successfully passed her genes on to the next generation= . Through this process we received our genetic inheritance, and we cannot c= hange it. Secondly, there is much evidence that only human breast milk perfectly matc= hes the needs of human infants. This has far-reaching implications for heal= thy development, including helping to achieve full intellectual potential. Thirdly, secure and unfailing bonds of attachment between a mother and her = baby have been essential for the breastfeeding and survival of all mammals.= Disruption of these attachment bonds - being life-threatening - normally c= auses acute distress, and if prolonged, it can be damaging. For most of the= time that humans have lived on earth, the support of other females in the = group, and preferably that of the father also, has been necessary for survi= val. Fourthly, the hormones and brain activities involved in human mothering are= now known to be much the same as in other mammals. The patterns of normal = mothering behavior that are common to all mammals depend on the same parts = of the basic mammalian 'maternal brain', but they require the right conditi= ons to function well. Fifthly, there is increasing evidence that disrupting natural mothering beh= aviors and relationships can cause harm in a variety of ways, leading to di= sturbed development, especially in the capacities for healthy and empathic = emotional relationships. Part Two: When the environment does not match early needs Disturbed development can arise when departures from natural patterns of mo= thering create environments that fail to match the biologically-based needs= of mothers, babies, and very young children, in ways that disrupt importan= t biological mechanisms that are based in the human genome. Such 'eco-genet= ic mismatch' can be especially harmful during pregnancy, childbirth, and ea= rly childhood. This mismatch often stems from teachings and practices that = neglect human needs and arise from ignorance and misconceived ideas about t= he nature of the human infant. However well-meaning, these can lead to dist= urbed development and a variety of emotional and physical disorders. Part Three: Conclusions and what can be done To put into practice some steps towards more healthy families and to improv= e their physical and emotional mental health, it is important to distinguis= h the needs of children nearer school age from those of infants. An infant'= s primary need is for nurturing and early mothering within a supportive soc= ial environment that preferably includes a loving father. To achieve this, we should seek to create societies that are in better harm= ony with the human biological 'givens'. We cannot change these 'givens', an= d we would therefore do well to accept them. This involves supporting healt= hy mothering, breastfeeding, and attachment, with generous maternity leave.= Natural patterns of mothering work best with the support of a father and a= n extended family and/or social group, within a suitable environment. 3D"Birth" You and I have some= thing in common. We were once babies and we each had a mother.
 =
Having a baby is hard work. Looking after a baby once you have it is = even harder. I have 5 children and my wife has worked very hard looking aft= er them. I wish I could say the same about myself. Dirty nappies, sleepless= nights, never ending washing, not to mention the emotional wear and tear. = Love is being committed to being committed but love always exacts a price.<= br /> 
I have some good news for you. You have a chance to thank = your mother next week on Mother's Day - Sunday 10th May 2009. Millions of A= ustralians will be waking up next Sunday to thank their mothers for being c= ommitted to being committed to them.
 
We at the Fatherhood = Foundation salute the mothers of Australia and ask the fathers of Australia= to appreciate their own mum and join with us as we roll out our Value Moth= ers 2009 campaign.
 
The Fatherhood Foundation has already c= ome under fire for running a campaign to support and honour mothers, (I sup= pose in much the same way as when our first Father's Day ads were aired) bu= t we take heart from the words of George Orwell, "We have now sunk to a dep= th at which re-statement of the obvious is now the duty of intelligent men.= "
 
Last week we covered the topic: 'War Against Fatherhood'= . Motherhood has also been demeaned quite heavily over the last few decades= . Ann Crittenden, an economics reporter for the New York Times, became a mo= ther later in life and wrote a book about her experiences, 'The = Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World is Still t= he Least Valued' =A9 2001.
 
Ann's words are powerful:
 
There's a certain lack of respect or regard for mothers' work = as highly skilled, incredibly valuable labor. At the heart of it is a failu= re to understand that this is really the central work of the modern economy= , which is based on highly skilled, creative, entrepreneurial people. Econo= mists used to consider land, labor, and capital to be the three main inputs= into economic wealth. Now they are saying that two-thirds of national weal= th is actually created by 'human capital', which are the skills, abilities,= and creative entrepreneurship of people.
 
If the child dev= elopment research is true, then human development begins on day one. And th= e most important person forming these skills and capabilities is the person= raising this child directly, most often the mother. We have completely ign= ored this central role that mothers play. So it's not a stretch to say that= mothers are the most important producers in the economy. And if so, we nee= d to put much more respect and real value on the work. It's the only job I = know of where you have to pay to do it, you don't get paid to do it. You pa= y a price economically to create an enormous amount of economic values, and= I think that's wrong.
 
Dr Peter Cook, in 'Mothering Denied - How our cultur= e harms women, infants and society' points out that where mothers are repla= ced by commercial daycare operations, children suffer in a number of differ= ent ways.
 
When fathers are taken out of the picture childr= en also suffer. It is exactly the same with mothers. For this reason the Da= ds4Kids Fatherhood Foundation is running a Value Mothers 2009 TV and media campaign. I will give= the last word to the mother who wrote to us about our adverts:

THE MOMMY TEST
I was out walking with my = 4 year old daughter. She picked up
something off the ground and starte= d to put it in her mouth. I took the
item away from her and I asked he= r not to do that.
"Why?" my daughter asked.
"Because it's been la= ying outside, you don't know where it's been,
it's dirty and probably = has germs" I replied.
At this point, my daughter looked at me with tot= al admiration and
asked, "Wow! How do you know all this stuff?"
"= Uh," ...I was thinking quickly,"All moms know this stuff. It's on
the = Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy."
We= walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was
evidently pon= dering this new information.
"OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you d= on't pass the test you
have to be the daddy"
"Exactly" I replied = back with a big smile on my face and joy in my
heart.

I'm a 38 year old single father; my daughter= and I have been on our own for 2 years now. Kelsey is four years old now, = so she's been without her mum for over half her life. What scares me about = the situation is that someday Kelsey is going to ask why her mum left her, = why she wasn't good enough for her to stay, and that's going to be a tough = thing for a kid. I've seen some psychologists about it, and if she needs he= lp someday, I'll definitely get help for her.
 
Some of the = struggles I've had raising a daughter have been difficult because I want to= be a mother and a father to her. My daughter didn't choose to have a singl= e dad, so I feel it's my responsibility to be a better parent than most kid= s are getting. At one point I was very involved with the P & F, and I do a = lot of volunteering to be involved. But some of the things that are hard fo= r me are things like doing her hair; these other girls come to school and t= heir hair is all pretty and has bows and is braided, but I can't do that; t= here's just a lot of things like that. Time issues are a struggle for me; I= wake up at 5 each morning, make our lunches, we go to school and work, and= by the time I get home, make dinner, get her ready for bed, there's no tim= e for play, no fun time. It's either parent or work time; I wouldn't trade = it for anything, but it's hard. I'd like to get some rest; it's always busy= , there are always things that need to be done.
 
For my dau= ghter, I know it's awkward for her because a lot of mums will come in to sc= hool to volunteer and have lunch. I drop her off at 7 a.m., and pick her up= at 6 pm, 11 hrs a day on average; That's really tough; I feel really guilt= y about that. She should be able to come home from school, have a snack, wa= tch TV, play with friends, and she doesn't have that opportunity, and I don= 't know if she will ever get to do that. I don't plan on remarrying until s= he is an adult or in college. I just don't want to break in a step-mother s= ituation. It's tough at school in May when they make mother's day cards, or= gifts for the mums at Christmas; typically most divorced parents there's a= mother and a father. She brought home a gift for her mum-what do we do wit= h it? Here we are in March and that gift is still sitting in a bag on the m= antle of my fireplace, and I don't know what to do with it. She says, "That= 's for my mum", and I want her to know she has a mum--but that's the bigges= t struggle, that she doesn't have a mum in her life.
 
When = I decided to get help, I didn't have any choice, I had to get help. I didn'= t know where to go, but a friend in the childcare industry helped lead me o= n the path I needed to get help. I was extremely fortunate; I got a hold of= one of the social workers; she gave me a list of childcare providers I cou= ld use, and I started calling and had that taken care of in 2-3 days. . .

Editors Note: This is a short summary By Dr Peter Cook about his newly r= evised breakthrough book about the importance of the Mother-Child Relations= hip. The Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundation encourages readers to downloa= d their own copy at our website. Peter's book is a wonderful affirmation ab= out the importance of mothers to our children.
 
Par= t One: Five lines of evidence for natural, 'best-fit' mothering
 
Firstly, by considering the direct maternal pe= digrees of each person alive today, we can deduce some important facts abou= t human beings and human nature, and the characteristics that must have bee= n essential for the survival of all our maternal ancestors, as they lived i= n tribes of hunter-gatherers, and each baby girl successfully passed her ge= nes on to the next generation. Through this process we received our genetic= inheritance, and we cannot change it.
Secondly, there is much evidence that only hum= an breast milk perfectly matches the needs of human infants. This has far-r= eaching implications for healthy development, including helping to achieve = full intellectual potential.
Thirdly, secure and unfailing bonds of attachm= ent between a mother and her baby have been essential for the breastfeeding= and survival of all mammals. Disruption of these attachment bonds - being = life-threatening - normally causes acute distress, and if prolonged, it can= be damaging. For most of the time that humans have lived on earth, the sup= port of other females in the group, and preferably that of the father also,= has been necessary for survival.
Fourthly, the hormones and brain activities in= volved in human mothering are now known to be much the same as in other mam= mals. The patterns of normal mothering behavior that are common to all mamm= als depend on the same parts of the basic mammalian 'maternal brain', but t= hey require the right conditions to function well.
Fifthly, there is increasing evidence that dis= rupting natural mothering behaviors and relationships can cause harm in a v= ariety of ways, leading to disturbed development, especially in the capacit= ies for healthy and empathic emotional relationships.
Part Two: When the environment does no= t match early needs
Disturbed development can arise when departure= s from natural patterns of mothering create environments that fail to match= the biologically-based needs of mothers, babies, and very young children, = in ways that disrupt important biological mechanisms that are based in the = human genome. Such 'eco-genetic mismatch' can be especially harmful during = pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood. This mismatch often stems from = teachings and practices that neglect human needs and arise from ignorance a= nd misconceived ideas about the nature of the human infant. However well-me= aning, these can lead to disturbed development and a variety of emotional a= nd physical disorders.
Part Three: Conclusions and what can b= e done
To put into practice some steps towards more h= ealthy families and to improve their physical and emotional mental health, = it is important to distinguish the needs of children nearer school age from= those of infants. An infant's primary need is for nurturing and early moth= ering within a supportive social environment that preferably includes a lov= ing father.
To achieve this, we should seek to create societies that a= re in better harmony with the human biological 'givens'. We cannot change t= hese 'givens', and we would therefore do well to accept them. This involves= supporting healthy mothering, breastfeeding, and attachment, with generous= maternity leave. Natural patterns of mothering work best with the support = of a father and an extended family and/or social group, within a suitable e= nvironment. Models exist that offer many benefits - even for 'the economy'.= To promote health and wellbeing in young children, their mothers, and soci= ety, we must work with Nature, not against her. Prevention is better than c= ure. A healthy mother-child relationship is a love affair that needs the ri= ght conditions to flourish. Infancy cannot be re-run later.

ONE in four Australian parents thinks it is acceptable to let their ch= ildren drink before they reach legal age, research shows.
The Generati= on Next Parental Research Study found 24 per cent of parents believed 16 wa= s an appropriate age for their children to start drinking under adult super= vision.
The research also shows 11 per cent are happy to serve a= lcohol to children under 16, despite growing evidence of the harm it can ca= use.

The majority of TV stations in Australia (see enclosed list) = are playing two 30 second Community Service Advertisements  featuring children talking abo= ut their Mum.
 
The adverts have been produced by the Dads4Kids Fatherhood Foundation= production team who want Australians everywhere to value their mothers= .
 
The CSA campaign has been named 'Mothers are Ang= els from Above' by 10 year old Comfort Ferguson.
 
= The children's responses on the advert range from the sublime to the matter= -of-fact. For example the 4 year old boy, who in response to the question '= What are you going to do for your mum on Mother's Day said, "Give her lots = of flowers", or the little girl who responded to the question of why do mot= hers exist, "If God didn't make mothers, I wouldn't be here."
 Warwick Marsh from Dads4Kids said, "The children show us why mothers ar= e so important in our fast paced materialistic world. Life is more about th= e quality of our relationships than about how much money we have in the ban= k. When a young boy tells the interviewer that he love his mum and Mother's= Day he is going to give her "a cup of tea in bed and a hog and a k= iss" his words just show how important it is to care for the ones = we love".
 
Alison Marsh, co-founder of Dads4Kids Fatherhood= Foundation, mother of 5 and the driving force behind www.motherhood.org.au   s= aid, "Dr Peter Cook, in his newly released groundbreaking book 'Mothering Denied' shows how children are harmed when mothers are forced back i= nto the workforce too early and babies and young children are plac= ed in daycare. Dr Cook has generously allowed the Dad4Kids to make download= s of his book freely available to the public. Dr Cook documents in his book= how breastfed babies are 5.9 points higher in overall IQ than those who ar= e not breastfed. I am jus= t wanting to express my sincere appreciation as a mother for your recent te= levision ads for Mothers Day.  These ads are just gorgeous.  Some= women's groups should take a leaf out of your book - most of them are very= one-eyed and anti-men.  Good on you for showing some maturity and rea= lising that children need both of their parents in their life and not pushi= ng an all-male agenda as men's groups so often do.
 
I am th= e mother of a daughter and a son, and I want what's best for both of my chi= ldren, as well as my husband.  I would like to think that if my marria= ge failed, my husband and I could be mature enough and love our children en= ough to co-parent in a positive way for the benefit of our children.
